Given These Speakers, Why Should Any Catholic Church Sponsor a Girl Scout Troop?

I have reported before on the links between Planned Parenthood & the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scouts have tried to downplay that connection. Given who some of the speakers are at 2011 National Council Session/52nd Convention it will be much harder to deny or downplay that connection. The pro-abortion, pro-Planned Parenthood links are even more visible because of those speakers.
Speak Now Girl Scouts (a group started by 2 ex-girl scouts to expose those links has issued a report on the featured speakers at this year's convention. & it is clear that the organization has fully bought into the Planned Parenthood pro-pomiscuity, pro-abortion agenda. In addition, 2 of the speakers have publicly attacked the Catholic Church's stand on abortion.
I will share part of the info on the speakers that Speak Now shared. They compare that info with the official, cleaned up, bios the Girl Scouts had on the convention website. You can go to the link above to read their full report.
1st of all, there is Swanee Hunt. In an 2003 article called Gagged and Bound, Hunt complained about Bush’s pro-life efforts as well as the president’s ban on late term abortion. She goes on to bash the Catholic Bishops for being out of step with the public “Catering to the religious right, Bush is also winning kudos from Catholic bishops, who have just renewed their hard-line stance against contraception as part of their anti-abortion campaign. These men are out of step with the public: 96% of Catholics ignore Church teaching on contraception, and a majority of Americans support a woman’s right to choose.”
Someone had better explain to her that it isn't the Catholic Church that is out of step, it is those who are NOT following Catholic teaching that are out of step with God.
Next up is Sylvia R Garcia. According to the report "Ms. Garcia's organization, National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) is quite connected to Planned Parenthood through common goals and collaboration. In June 2011, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast and Planned Parenthood Trust of South Texas joined the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH), Catholics for Choice, EMILY’s List, and Annie’s List as co-hosts of a reception celebrating champions for Latina health during the 28th Annual Conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO). Her willingness to work with Catholics for Choice makes it clear she supports attacking the Church's teaching on abortion.
We now move on to Annise D. Parker. Here is part of what they have to say about her: "Parker is the first homosexual mayor of a major U.S. city. Parker, who lives with her life partner Kathy Hubbard, campaign treasurer for Planned Parenthood, and their three adopted children, also sits on the board of the pro-abortion girls club, Girls Inc. . . . Parker’s upcoming bid for re-election as Houston Mayor is endorsed by Planned Parenthood. (Originally the GSUSA Speaker bio noted Parker’s “life partner”, but this information was later scrubbed from the bio on the Girl Scouts official website)."
Given that the Girl Scouts claim they have no official stand on sexual preference & that they recently allowed a transgender 7-year-old boy to join a troop in Colorado, why did they scrub the "life partner" info? I can only guess that they were afraid of a backlash if people got wind of the real agenda of 1 of the speakers. It might also make people look at the other speakers a little more closely as well.
I want to look at 1 last speaker, CJ Golden. Golden is a huge promoter of new age ideas. She is the author of TAO OF THE DEFIANT WOMAN, and TAO-GIRLS RULE! Speak Out adds this info: " If you're not familiar with Taoism, consider this article excerpt by Sue Brinkmann, a New Age expert. “Taoism does not admit a Creator who is conscious and personal or who strives for us. Neither does Taoism admit original sin, though it recognizes destructive behavior. In Taoism there is no need for salvation, only enlightenment.” Ms. Golden's website TaoGirl.com links to TaoGirls regular column on GirlZone.com. Both Girl Scouts USA and TaoGirl.com are listed as Content Partners for GirlZone. According to GirlZone "Content Partners support the Girl Zone mission." GirlZone provides listing of resources for girls under to topic of "know your body" including:"Teenwire", aka the explicit Planned Parenthood website for teens TeenGrowth, which provides a whole host of sexual advice for teens including the fact that anti-purity behavior is A-OK, even if your church says its not.
That is only a small part of the story. Again I would suggest you go to the report to see the whole list of speakers including keynote speaker Katie Couric & Catherine B. Reynolds, whose Foundation promotes Margaret Sanger as a role model for her promotion of birth control & founding Planned Parenthood.
Any way the Girl Scouts leadership may try & spin it, their organization does promote Planned Parenthood's agenda. & any involvement in the Girl Scouts is an endorsement of the Girl Scouts endorsement of Planned Parenthood.
For those who are looking for a safe alternative I would recommend American Heritage Girls. I have several friends who have their daughters in the troop at St. Mary's in E DBQ. They are being taught solid Christian principles as well as offering all the other positive aspects of the Girl Scout program without the negatives that the Girl Scouts  have wholeheartly embraced.  (FYI: This past Summer the Rockford Diocese, which St. Mary's is in, named Msgr. Daniel Deutsch, pastor at Holy Cross,  the diocesan chaplain for the American Heritage Girls troops in the diocese.

Halloween:
The Real Story!

We’ve all heard the allegations. Halloween is a pagan rite dating back to some pre-Christian festival among the Celtic Druids that escaped Church suppression. Even today modern pagans and witches continue to celebrate this ancient festival. If you let your kids go trick-or-treating, they will be worshiping the devil and pagan gods.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The origins of Halloween are, in fact, very Christian and rather American. Halloween falls on October 31 because of a pope, and its observances are the result of medieval Catholic piety.

It’s true that the ancient Celts of Ireland and Britain celebrated a minor festival on Oct. 31 — as they did on the last day of most other months of the year. However, Halloween falls on the last day of October because the Feast of All Saints or "All Hallows" falls on Nov. 1. The feast in honor of all the saints in heaven used to be celebrated on May 13, but Pope Gregory III (d. 741) moved it to Nov. 1, the dedication day of All Saints Chapel in St. Peter’s at Rome. Later, in the 840s, Pope Gregory IV commanded that All Saints be observed everywhere. And so the holy day spread to Ireland. The day before was the feast’s evening vigil, "All Hallows Even" or "Hallowe’en." In those days, Halloween didn’t have any special significance for Christians or for long-dead Celtic pagans.

In 998, St. Odilo, the abbot of the powerful monastery of Cluny in Southern France, added a celebration on Nov. 2. This was a day of prayer for the souls of all the faithful departed. This feast, called All Souls Day, spread from France to the rest of Europe.

So now the Church had feasts for all those in heaven and all those in purgatory? What about those in the other place? It seems Irish Catholic peasants wondered about the unfortunate souls in hell. After all, if the souls in hell are left out when we celebrate those in heaven and purgatory, they might be unhappy enough to cause trouble. So it became customary to bang pots and pans on All Hallows Even to let the damned know they were not forgotten. Thus, in Ireland, at least, all the dead came to be remembered — even if the clergy were not terribly sympathetic to Halloween and never allowed All Damned Day into the Church calendar.

But that still isn’t our celebration of Halloween. Our traditions on this holiday centers around dressing up in fanciful costumes, which isn’t Irish at all. Rather, this custom arose in France during the 14th and 15th centuries. Late medieval Europe was hit by repeated outbreaks of the bubonic plague — the Black Death — and she lost about half her population. It is not surprising that Catholics became more concerned about the afterlife. More Masses were said on All Souls’ Day, and artistic representations were devised to remind everyone of their own mortality.

We know these representations as the "Dance Macabre" or "Dance of Death," which was commonly painted on the walls of cemeteries and shows the devil leading a daisy chain of people — popes, kings, ladies, knights, monks, peasants, lepers, etc. — into the tomb. Sometimes the dance was presented on All Souls’ Day itself as a living tableau with people dressed up in the garb of various states of life. But the French dressed up on All Souls, not Halloween; and the Irish, who had Halloween, did not dress up. How the two became mingled probably happened first in the British colonies of North America during the 1700s when Irish and French Catholics began to intermarry. The Irish focus on hell gave the French masquerades and even more macabre twist.

But, as every young ghoul knows, dressing up isn’t the point; the point is getting as many goodies as possible. Where on earth did "trick or treat" come in?

"Trick or treat" is perhaps the oddest and most American addition to Halloween, and is the unwilling contribution of English Catholics.

During the penal period of the 1500s to the 1700s in England, Catholics had no legal rights. They could not hold office and were subject to fines, jail and heavy taxes. It was a capital offense to say Mass, and hundreds of priests were martyred.

Occasionally, English Catholics resisted, sometimes foolishly. One of the most foolish acts of resistance was a plot to blow up the Protestant King James I and his Parliament with gunpowder. This was supposed to trigger a Catholic uprising against their oppressors. The ill-conceived Gunpowder Plot was foiled on Nov. 5, 1605, when the man guarding the gunpowder, a reckless convert named Guy Fawkes, was captured and arrested. He was hanged; the plot fizzled.

Nov. 5, Guy Fawkes’ Day, became a great celebration in England, and so it remains. During the penal periods, bands of revelers would put on masks and visit local Catholics in the dead of night, demanding beer and cakes for their celebration: trick or treat!

Guy Fawkes’ Day arrived in the American colonies with the first English settlers. But, buy the time of the American Revolution, old King James and Guy Fawkes had pretty much been forgotten. Trick or treat, though, was too much fun to give up, so eventually it moved to Oct. 31, the day of the Irish-French masquerade. And in America, trick or treat wasn’t limited to Catholics.

The mixture of various immigrant traditions we know as Halloween had become a fixture in the Unites States by the early 1800s. To this day, it remains unknown in Europe, even in the countries from which some of the customs originated.

But what about witches? Well, they are one of the last additions. The greeting card industry added them in the late 1800s. Halloween was already "ghoulish," so why not give witches a place on greeting cards? The Halloween card failed (although it has seen a recent resurgence in popularity), but the witches stayed. So, too, in the late 1800s, ill-informed folklorists introduced the jack-o’-lantern. They thought that Halloween was druidic and pagan in origin. Lamps made from turnips (not pumpkins) had been part of ancient Celtic harvest festivals, so they were translated to the American Halloween celebration.

The next time someone claims that Halloween is a cruel trick to lure your children into devil worship, I suggest you tell them the real origin of All Hallows Even and invite them to discover its Christian significance, along with the two greater and more important Catholic festivals that follow it.

Cardinal Pell Definitely Isn't Trying to Get on Algore's Good Side

Last Wednesday (26 Oct 2011), Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, Australia gave an address in London at Westminster Cathedral Hall. Cardinal Pell spoke at the annual lecture of London's Global Warming Policy Foundation. The lecture was titled “Eppur’ si muove, or ‘yet it moves:’ One Christian Perspective on Climate Change.” What he said was definitely not intended to win fans in the global warming/climate change/climate disruption (insert today's label here) gang.
In short he called those pushing for sweeping changes at any cost arrogant. He talked about their “totalitarian approach to opposing views, their demonizing of successful opponents and their opposition to the publication of opposing views even in scientific journals."
I found his title interesting as "Eppur’ si muove" is what Galileo is supposed to have muttered after recanting his heliocentrism in the face of a “scientific consensus.” Now a days the "scientific consensus" gang use Galileo as a club to attack the Catholic Church as antiscientist while doing the very thing to those that disagree with the consensus (ie: climate change, evolution, embryonic stem cell research for example) they are pushing.
The lecture begins with comparing the current scientific attitude of today to that of those who built the Tower of Babel. He quotes Leon R. Kass' "The Beginning of Wisdom". Pell points out that Kass says "metaphor of the tower is ambiguous, but could be seen as a presumptuous attempt to control or appropriate the divine." Pell goes on to add that "'Kass sees God's intervention as only highlighting the inevitable failure of an attempt to impose a single world-view, "the all-too-human, prideful attempt at self-creation'". & that "Kass believes that in today's Western world 'the project of Babel has been making a comeback.... Science and technology are again in the ascendancy, defying political boundaries en route to a projected human imperium over nature'. Kass asks 'Can our new Babel succeed?'"
From what I see in the justification of embryonic stem cell research or genetic manipulation of combining human & animal genes by proponants of that reseach, Kass hits it right on the nail.
Pell then goes on to explain why he is within his rights to speak out as a Bishop by answering the criticism by scientists of the Church I already mentioned.
He points out how Galileo's provocative claims on theology sharpened the tensions between him & the Church theologians at the time. He goes on to talk about the debate between Bishop Wilberforce & T. H. Huxley in 1860 at Oxford on the topic of Darwinian evolution. He points out how that debate has been misrepresented. He also shares what Darwin had to say about Wilberforce's 18,000-word review of The Origin of Species (1859) Darwin said it was "uncommonly clever", and made "a very telling case against me"
Pell then goes on to call those who say that "the science is truly settled" on the fundamental theory of climate change, that global warming is happening, that it is primarily caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide & it is certain to have profound effects in the future scientific fundamentalists. After looking at the problems with their so-called certainty he calls Algore's film, An Inconvenient Truth propaganda.
Pell goes on to look at some real "inconvenient truths" for those promoting the radical green agenda.
For instance not just weather but also "future climate states" are not reliably predictable in the long term. Or that "The influence of various solar mechanisms (such as sunspot activity) and changing ocean circulation, which are poorly understood, are "omitted from the climate models", as is the influence of major volcanoes such as the occasional mighty eruption of Krakatoa or Mount Saint Helens or the continuing eruptions deep in the ocean, brought to public attention by Professor Ian Plimer."
1 of the things he looks at in depth is how "Multiple lines of evidence show that in many places most of the 11,700 years since the end of the last Ice Age were warmer than the present by up to 2 degrees Celsius." He points out how "nobody seems too concerned about the Minoan warming of about 3,500 years ago. The Roman warming around 2,000 years ago provokes some heart burn, while we have seen attempts to erase the Medieval Warm period (850-1300AD) from history."
Pell mentions that "Professor Bob Carter lists eight different recent scientific studies from 2000-08 on proxy data such as tree-ring records, borehole temperature methods, and deep cores in glaciers, lake beds and ocean floors which demonstrate the existence of the Medieval Warming with temperatures equal to or higher than today."
Additionally "Dr. Craig Idso has collected papers over the past quarter of a century from more than 1000 scientists in 578 research institutions in 44 countries, providing evidence by a multitude of empirical methods that, taken together, establish that the Medieval Warm Period was real, was global, and was warmer than the present."
The evidence:
- Commercial vineyards in England flourished 300 to 500 kilometres north of twentieth century limits. So popular were quality English wines then that the French tried to have their sale banned on the Continent.
- In 1300 a farm owned by Kelso Abbey in southern Scotland had sheep and land under cultivation at 300 metres above sea level, well above today's limits.
- In Scandinavia and central Norway farming spread 100 to 200 metres further up valleys and hillsides. In this time forests in the Alps were between 80-200 metres higher than today. Bitter winters were a rarity.
- The warmer weather also allowed significant new colonisation. For four hundred years, from 800 to 1200 approximately, Vikings or Northmen from Scandinavia roamed European waterways, terrorising coastal areas. By 874 they had settled permanently in Iceland.
- From Iceland twenty-five ships of colonists sailed with him and fourteen arrived to establish the Eastern Settlement in south-west Greenland. Another group went further north to found the Western Settlement. These remained for nearly 400 years.
- At least one Viking burial places still lies in the Greenland permafrost and the Medieval Warming there remains as an inconvenient fact.

These are only a few examples used by Cardinal Pell. I could go on & on.
Pell concludes his talk with a suggestion of how to better spend the money used to make global warming go away. "He says that the "money should be used to raise living standards and reduce vulnerability to catastrophes and climate change (in whatever direction), so helping people to cope better with future challenges. We need to be able to afford to provide the Noahs of the future with the best arks science and technology can provide."
Calling for common sense & prudence Pell asks: "Are there any long term benefits from the schemes to combat global warming, apart from extra tax revenues for governments and income for those devising and implementing the schemes? Will the burdens be shared generally, or fall mainly on the shoulders of the battlers, the poor?" Then he reminds us of the Latin maxim "in dubio non agitur" (don't act when in doubt).
He ends by going back to Galileo. "When Galileo was placed under house arrest primarily because of his claim that the earth moved around the sun, he is said to have muttered 'Eppur' si muove'; and yet it moves.
As for Galileo so for us, the appeal must be to the evidence, not to any consensus, whatever the levels of confusion or self-interested coercion. First of all we need adequate scientific explanations as a basis for our economic estimates. We also need history, philosophy, even theology and many will use, perhaps create, mythologies. But most importantly we need to distinguish which is which
."
In short, Cardinal Pell laid out some good criteria for determining the truth. & consensus alone is NOT good criteria.
Those who say that the whole climate change disaster is settled science because of scientific concensus & refuse to look at any facts, no matter how overwhelming, to the contrary remind me of an old saying describing those with closed minds. "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts." Yes, we need to be good stewards of creation. But it is clear that we can't base that stewardship on the claims of the modern builders of a new Tower of Babel.

Maybe They Should Try Being Tolerant

I 1st heard this story from Jihad Watch when I was listenning to Rush on the radio while driving arround doing errands this afternoon. I said to myself "You have got to be kidding! What do you expect at a Catholic College?"  OK, granted Catholic U isn't as solidly Catholic as it should be, but it is better than a lot of them. But when you go to a Catholic College you should expect to see things that identify it as such.
I wonder how willing these same Muslim students would be to support a Catholic chapel on the Islamic American University campus?
The person behind this lawsuit, John F. Banzhaf III (more on him later), claims that the Muslim students are being denied the opportunity to form a student group. My question is, have they even tried, or is this just Banzhaf using them as another way to attack the College for being Catholic?
For those who may not recognize his name, this guy is also being the lawsuit against Catholic U that claims same sex dorms are discrimanatory.  How do these same Muslims feel about that? Do they realize that all he is doing is using them for his own agenda?
These 2 lawsuits are just the latest of his social engineering attempts at trying to force his ultraliberal, radical worldview on everyone else. He ia also behind the recent obesity lawsuits. What we see in him is an elitist that thinks the rest of us, especially those who are faithful Catholics (or Christians for that matter) as ignorant sheep who need to be lead arround by those who know better. May I remind you that we have seen this before, it was called Nazi Germany, Stalinist Russia, or Fascist Italia among others. & we all remember what things were like there.
This guy is clearly out to undermine the real public interest, the right to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness & replace it with his "Animal Farm" idea of how things should be. What is really sad is when he started out he was actually working to protect people's rights, not take them away & replace them with government control. Or a liberal elitist dictatorship to be more accurate.
In the end, should this guy suceed, he will be undermining religious liberty. He will especially be taking away the right to free expression, even in private. Remember, Catholic U is a private Catholic College.
He is also promoting intolerance, not tolerance. If I go to a Muslim mosque, or college, I should expect that they be fully free to express their faith. & the reverse should be just as true, a Muslim on a Catholic Campus has no right to expect that Catholic symbols be gotten rid of because they make him uncomfortable.
On the other hand, does Banzhaf realize that what he is doing could backfire if Islamic radicalists gain control here. This lawsuit, if successful, would enable those trying to force sharia law on the rest of us to do so. & something tells me that if we come under Muslim control, life for him would be anything but pleasant as they would clearly disagree with much of what he has been fighting for.







Crucifixes? At a Catholic university? How about that.




Of course, at the heart of this complaint is the hope of establishing a Muslim prayer space on the campus that would be subject to different standards than the rest of the university -- a little enclave of Islamic law where its ban on the display of crosses would be "respected."



It is mentioned below that Muslim students say they like CUA because they feel "safe" and "comfortable." They are receiving the benefits of what Catholics have built at CUA, but are expecting more. They want to bend the institution to their own purposes for their own "comfort."



They think it's a fine place, if it just weren't so, you know, Catholic, and therefore un-Islamic. "University Accused of Discriminating Against Muslims," from CUA's The Tower, October 20 (thanks to B.):



New charges have recently been filed against the University on counts of illegal discrimination against its Muslim and female students. The allegations are being reviewed by the District of Colombia Office of Human Rights (OHR), which has the strictest discrimination laws in the country. President John H. Garvey and the University is being urged to respond to the charges.

John F. Banzhaf III, the George Washington University Professor of Public Interest Law who initiated the legal controversy surrounding same-sex residence halls, is also the one behind these new charges.

The official allegations claim that CUA, “does not provide space – as other universities do – for the many daily prayers Muslim students must make, forcing them instead to find temporarily empty classrooms where they are often surrounded by Catholic symbols which are incongruous to their religion,” according to a press release on PRLOG.com.

This formal complaint also maintains that the new same-sex residence halls are particularly discriminating against female students, which is a new position on the same-sex lawsuit that began last month.

For both aspects of the complaint: it's a Catholic university, a private institution. No one is being forced to attend it. On the other hand, its very nature and identity puts a giant target on it for social engineering.



Banzhaf claims that the University is denying Muslim students the same benefits that students of other religions are able to enjoy since there is no formal Muslim association sponsored by Catholic University but the Columbus School of Law has an association for Jewish students

“Denying Muslim students the opportunity for form a student group on campus could hardly be based upon any fundamental Catholic doctrine since Georgetown University not only has such a Muslim student group, but also provides its Muslim students with a separate prayer room and even a Muslim chaplain,” said Banzhaf in that press release.

“An important reason [that Muslims are gravitating towards Catholic universities] is that the Muslim students, especially those who are observant, feel comfortable and safe at the institution,” said President Garvey in an interview with NPR in December of 2010. “It’s a place where their own faith practices are mirrored by our own. And they feel both welcome and understood at the campus.”

Gentlemen, start your platitudes:



“Even though it’s a Catholic school, a lot of its teachings are very similar to Islam,” said Al Salmi. “It teaches respect, community service, love, worship etc. which are things that Islam also teaches.”

The discrimination charge asserts that although OHR has been investigating alleged discrimination on campus since Banzhaf’s lawsuit began, “neither the President nor anyone else speaking for the University has sought to explain to the public, or even to CUA’s own students, why it believes that its discrimination does not violate the Human Rights Act.”

“As University spokesman, I have repeatedly explained to anyone who has asked me, including the media, that we reject the premise of Banzhaf’s argument, namely that single-sex residence halls are discriminatory,” said Victor Nakas, University Vice President of Public Affairs. “And we also reject his assumption that the Human Rights Act requires residence halls to be co-ed.”

That does a fine job of illustrating the mindset at work here. Rules and standards are hate and discrimination.



As these charges are being considered by the Office of Human Rights, the University administration said they will continue to work towards the betterment of its students.

“Catholic University is committed to the religious freedom and dignity of all members of its community,” said Nakas. “This includes the dozens of Muslims who come to the University for its academic excellence as well as its demonstrated history of outreach and dialogue to people of all faiths.”

Following the "Occupy" Philsophy. . . .

9 Days That Changed the World

On Monday 24 Oct 2011, Newt & Callista Gingrich were in DBQ. They were mainly here to promote her new book, Sweet Land of Liberty, as well as their new biographical documentary film about Blessed Pope John Paul II, 9 Days That Changed the World. Of course any appearance former Speaker Gingrich makes these days does have a campaign aspect because he is running for president.
At 7pm they were at Loras College to promote the documentary as well as sign their books. But before they did either of those there was a short Q&A session. On the subject of abortion & Planned Parenthood he made it clear that he was opposed to Planned Parenthood getting any federal money. He wants the money they are currently getting to go to adoption programs instead.
He was critical of the federal bureaucracy when it comes to education. He said the 3 key components were parents, children & teachers. He went on to make it clear that he supports a merit system that rewards good teachers. Talking about the bailouts he said the companies should not have been bailed out. He called the bailouts socialism.
But perhaps the most interesting question was 1 he was asked on the environment. Why do I say it was interesting? It was because of the term used by the person, "climate disruption". Apparently that is the latest term to use because people are seeing through "climate change" as being a desription of the normal way things operate, not something abnormal. Gingrich tried to give a straight answer but the questioner kept interupting him. It was clear to me that she didn't like his answer. He said that there may be some concerns but the facts aren't as settled as those pushing the whole immenant disaster if we don't do something scenerio, like the questioner. He quoted a recent study published in the Nature Journal of Science that showed more solar heat is escaping than originally thought. He also pointed out some facts oft ignored that showed the climate has been warmer before. 1 of those facts is the existance of dinosaur bones in the Antarctic. I will say that if I were Speaker Gingrich I would have told the questioner to quit interupting & please let me answer rather than letting her keep interupting. But as I said, she didn't like the answers she was getting that were able to answer her objections.
After about a half hour of signing books, Newt & Callista Gingrich gave a short introductory talk about the documentary. This was followed by a screening of the movie.
The title is a reference to Blessed John Paul's 1st visit to Poland after being elected Pope. But the film is much more than a look at that visit. The 1st part of the film looks at the early life of Karol Józef Wojtyła up to his being elected Pope. This part of the film laid the groundwork for understanding what that visit meant to the communist party in Poland & even moreso to the Soviet leadership in Moscow who were especially unhappy with the visit. The film then goes on to look at the 9 day vist. 1 of the interesting ironies of that visit is how it came about. Originally Blessed Pope John Paul had wanted a 2 day visit in May to celebrate the 900th Anniversary of the martyrdom of Stanislaus of Szczepanów. Fearing the political implications of that visit the Polish leadership offered a 9 day visit in June as an alternative. As I watched what happenned during that visit I couldn't help but think how big a mistake they made since the 9 day visit did more to bring about what they feared than the original 2 day visit ever would have.
The last part of the video looked at what happenned after the visit, including the assasination attempt on Blessed John Paul in 1981. It looked a bit at the relationship between Blessed John Paul & President Reagan. As a part of that relationship, it looked at Reagan's visit to Brandenburg Gate. It shared a part of the speech that has been ignored by the media. The focus has been the "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" line Reagan said about midway through the speech. But toward the end of the speech Reagan said something that repeated the theme of the Cross & faith that ran through what Blessed John Paul had shared in the 1st visit.
Reagan said: "Years ago, before the East Germans began rebuilding their churches, they erected a secular structure: the television tower at Alexander Platz. Virtually ever since, the authorities have been working to correct what they view as the tower's one major flaw: treating the glass sphere at the top with paints and chemicals of every kind. Yet even today when the sun strikes that sphere, that sphere that towers over all Berlin, the light makes the sign of the cross. There in Berlin, like the city itself, symbols of love, symbols of worship, cannot be suppressed.
As I looked out a moment ago from the Reichstag, that embodiment of German unity, I noticed words crudely spray-painted upon the wall, perhaps by a young Berliner (quote):
"This wall will fall. Beliefs become reality."
Yes, across Europe, this wall will fall, for it cannot withstand faith; it cannot withstand truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom." They also showed a picture of the tower & yes, the cross was there.
The film also made the point that the message of the dangers of relativism wasn't simply originated by then Cardinal Ratzinger but was also a huge theme of Blessed John Paul's message.
The entire film runs for about 94 minutes & is definitely worth seeing. There were a couple times when it seemed the film reached a natural conclusion, but then it went on to add more. None of what was added was extraneous. It all served to support the central theme of the film, how the 9 Day visit "created a revolution of conscience that transformed Poland and fundamentally reshaped the spiritual and political landscape of the 20th Century."  While I have also pointed out a couple of the things I learned from the film that I didn't know before, there were other historical facts I didn't previously that I learned from seeing the film.
I highly recommend the film. It was well done. It had plenty of interviews of people who were a part of the events. & it also had some never before seen footage of film taken by the Polish Communist leadership during the visit. It is a documentary that shows how God worked through Blessed John Paul to bring about the downfall of communism in Eastern Europe & the Soviet Union. But it is also a challenge to us. It is a reminder that we must continue to spread the Gospel message in a world that is trying to exclude God. It is that message of the Cross that gave the Polish people hope & the courage to do what they had to do to bring about the changes in Poland. It is that same message that is needed today in a world that denies the existance of God & absolute truth, a world where darkness & dispair seems to be winning. It is that same message that will give hope in these times of darkness. It is that message that will encourage us to continue in our battles against evil. In our case that battle especially includes the evil of the "culture of death". Until the return of Christ we must continue that battle. & no matter how dark or hopeless things seem, the Cross is our assurance that in the end, we will win.

Your Mission As A Catholic IS To Evangelize





 

“As the Father has sent me, even so I send you” (Jn 20:21)


On the occasion of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, at the beginning of a new millennium of the Christian era Venerable John Paul II forcefully reaffirmed the need to renew the commitment to bear the proclamation of the Gospel to everyone, sharing “the enthusiasm of the very first Christians” (Novo Millennio Ineunte, n. 58).
It is the most precious service that the Church can render to humanity and to all individuals who are seeking the profound reasons to live their life to the full. This same invitation therefore resonates every year during the celebration of World Mission Day. Continuous proclamation of the Gospel, in fact, also invigorates the Church, her fervour and her apostolic spirit. It renews her pastoral methods so that they may be ever better suited to the new situations — even those which require a new evangelization — and enlivened by missionary zeal: “missionary activity renews the Church, revitalizes faith and Christian identity, and offers fresh enthusiasm and new incentive. Faith is strengthened when it is given to others! It is in commitment to the Church's universal mission that the new evangelization of Christian peoples will find inspiration and support” (John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, n. 2).
Go and proclaim
This objective is continually revived by the celebration of the Liturgy, especially of the Eucharist which always concludes by re-echoing the mandate the Risen Jesus gave to the Apostles: “Go...” (Mt 28:19). The Liturgy is always a call “from the world” and a new missionary mandate “in the world” in order to witness to what has been experienced: the saving power of the word of God, the saving power of Christ’s Paschal Mystery.
All those who have encountered the Risen Lord have felt the need to proclaim the news of it to others, as did the two disciples of Emmaus. After recognizing the Lord in the breaking of the bread, “they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the Eleven gathered together” and reported what had happened to them on the road (Lk 24:33-34).
Pope John Paul II urged the faithful to be “watchful, ready to recognize his face and run to our brothers and sisters with the Good News: ‘We have seen the Lord!’” (Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte n. 59).
To all
The proclamation of the Gospel is intended for all peoples. The Church is “by her very nature missionary since, according to the plan of the Father, she has her origin in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Decree on the Church’s Missionary Activity Ad Gentes, n. 2).
This is “the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize” (Paul VI, Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, n. 14). Consequently she can never be closed in on herself. She is rooted in specific places in order to go beyond them. Her action, in adherence to Christ's word and under the influence of his grace and his charity, is fully and currently present to all people and all peoples, to lead them to faith in Christ, (cf. Ad Gentes, n. 5).
This task has lost none of its urgency. Indeed “The mission of Christ the Redeemer, which is entrusted to the Church, is still very far from completion... an overall view of the human race shows that this mission is still only beginning and that we must commit ourselves wholeheartedly to its service” (John Paul II, Encyclical Redemptoris Missio, n. 1). We cannot reconcile ourselves to the thought that after 2,000 years there are still people who do not know Christ and have never heard his Message of salvation.
And this is not all; an increasing number of people, although they have received the Gospel proclamation, have forgotten or abandoned it and no longer recognize that they belong to the Church; and in many contemporary contexts, even in traditionally Christian societies, people are averse to opening themselves to the word of faith. A cultural change nourished by globalization, by currents of thought and by the prevalent relativism, is taking place. This change is leading to a mindset and lifestyle that ignore the Gospel Message, as though God did not exist, and exalt the quest for well-being, easy earnings, a career and success as life’s purpose, even to the detriment of moral values.
The corresponsibility of all
The universal mission involves all, all things and always. The Gospel is not an exclusive possession of whoever has received it but a gift to share, good news to communicate. And this gift-commitment is not only entrusted to a few but on the contrary to all the baptized, who are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people” (1 Pt 2:9), so that they may declare his wonderful deeds.
All activities are involved in it. Attention to and cooperation in the Church's evangelizing work in the world cannot be limited to a few moments or special occasions nor can they be considered as one of the many pastoral activities: the Church’s missionary dimension is essential and must therefore always be borne in mind.
It is important that both individual baptized people and ecclesial communities be involved in the mission, not sporadically or occasionally but in a constant manner, as a form of Christian life. The World Mission Day itself is not an isolated moment in the course of the year but rather a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect on whether and how we respond to our missionary vocation; an essential response for the Church’s life.
Global evangelization
Evangelization is a complex process and entails various elements. Among them missionary animation has always paid special attention to solidarity. This is also one of the objectives of World Mission Day which, through the Pontifical Mission Societies, requests aid in order to carry out the tasks of evangelization in mission territories. It is a matter of supporting institutions necessary for establishing and consolidating the Church through catechists, seminaries and priests, and of making one’s own contribution to improving the standard of living for people in countries where the phenomena of poverty, malnutrition — especially among children — disease, the lack of health care and education are the most serious.
This is also part of the Church’s mission and in proclaiming the Gospel, she takes human life to heart fully. The Servant of God Paul VI reaffirmed that in evangelization it is unacceptable to disregard areas that concern human advancement, justice and liberation from every kind of oppression, obviously with respect for the autonomy of the political sphere.
Lack of concern for the temporal problems of humanity “would be to forget the lesson which comes to us from the Gospel concerning love of our neighbour who is suffering and in need” (Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi, nn. 31, 34). It would not be in harmony with the behaviour of Jesus who “went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity” (Mt 9:35).
Thus, through co-responsible participation in the Church’s mission, the Christian becomes a builder of the communion, peace and solidarity that Christ has given us, who cooperates in the implementation of God’s saving plan for all humanity. The challenges that this plan encounters calls all Christians to walk together and the mission is an integral part of this journey with everyone. In it – although in earthenware vessels – we bear our Christian vocation, the priceless treasure of the Gospel, the living witness of Jesus dead and Risen, encountered and believed in in the Church.
May World Mission Day revive in each one the desire to go and the joy of “going” to meet humanity, bringing Christ to all. In his name I impart the Apostolic Blessing to you and, in particular, to those who make the greatest efforts and suffer most for the Gospel.

2 Important Petitions to Sign to Fight Planned Parenthood

There are 2 important petitions on the internet that will let Congress know that you are opposed to Planned Parenthood & what it stands for.
The 1st petition is sponsored by LifeNews.com & Americans United for Life. The petition is addressed to Rep. Cliff Stearns (chair of the House Energy & Commerce Committee's Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee) who recently announced that his committee will investigate Planned Parenthood. He has come under a lot of attack both in Congress & across the country from those who don't want to hold Planned Parenthood accountable for their criminal actions. The pro-aborts are hiding being the lie that Planned Parenthood is an important health care provider to allow it to continue to cover up rape, incest & white slavery (prostitution) as well as using our tax funds to underwrite its abortion business.
Rep. Henry Waxman attacked the investigation, saying "Your fervent ideological opposition to Planned Parenthood does not justify launching this intrusive investigation." Given how many times Waxman has lead investigations in the House over the 4 years it was under Democratic control, it is clear that this has nothing to do with Stearns ideology & everything to do with Waxman's strong pro-abort & thus pro-Planned Parenthood ideology. Waxman's statement entitles him to be pictured in the dictionary as a living embodiment of the word hypocrite.

"Occupy Wall Street" in Italia

This is what happenned in Rome Saturday during their version of an "Occupy Wall Street" protest. Riot would be a better word for it.


This statue of Mary, along with a crucifix from the 18th-century church of Santi Marcellino & Pietro near St John Lateran square were only a small part of the violence done by the protestors.
According to the parish priest, Fr. Giuseppe Ciucci, this is what he found when he inspected the Church after the "protest": “When I came down, I saw the entrance door had been smashed in.
The Virgin Mary’s statue, which was at the entrance, had been taken away and I saw it had been thrown into the street and smashed.
I went into the sacristy and I saw the door there was also destroyed. The large crucifix at the entrance had been vandalized
.”
As I pointed out, this was only a part of the damage done that day in Rome. The protestors torched cars, smashed banks & hurled rocks at police during the clashes.
While I fully support a person's right to protest (even if I disagree with the reasons for it) this was not protesting. This was mob violence. & in the case of the attack on the Church, blasphemous desecration of the church that had nothing at all to do with the reasons behind the protest. But, it does give me some insight into the real spirit behind the protest. & yes, I am saying that there was a demonic spirit operating here. Why else would they do the damage they did to the Crucifix & the statue of Mary? The Crucifix represents Jesus' defeat of Satan & Mary is the woman prophecied in Genesis 3 that God said he would bring this about through.
Another fact that tells me there is more behind this than merely protesting their conditions is who is supporting the "Occupy" movement. The American Nazi Party recenly endorsed the movement. & a huge number of those involved are of a communist/Stalinist socialist leaning as well.
A lot of what I am seeing in the USA these days reminds me of what things were like in pre-WW II Germany or Italia. I am speaking about the moral decay as well as the economic problems The methods they used to bring down the government & bring Hitler & Mussolini into power were similar to what went on in Italia & what is going on in the "Occupy" movement. Given how these people are following the same agenda to set up a socialist state here in the USA, I think my concerns are valid & that we need to be vigilent in doing what we can to prevent this from happenning. It is still not to late to turn us away from the edge.
Note: If you want to see a movie that captures the decedance of pre WWII Germany, even if it is fiction, watch Cabaret. Be sure to note the similarities to where we are today.
The Nazis, Fascists & Communists used violence & terror to gain & maintain control. They used mobs like these to do so. Yes, there are problems. But turing the USA into a socialist state is not the answer. Again, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italia & the Soviet Union show us that socialism doesn't work, it just makes things worse. The Catholic Church has & always will condemn socialism. & while it makes it clear that some things done in the name of capitalism are wrong, it doesn't condemn capitalism. It also aplauds the free market "because of its capacity to guarantee effective results in the production of goods and services." (Compendium of Social Doctrine Par 347) The Church also is a strong supporter of property rights as well. (I would highly recommend reading Rerum Novarum as well as Chapters 6 & 7 of the Compendium for an accurate view of what the Catholic Church actually teaches.) The Church also makes it clear that people are not to get a free handout of everything from the government they want just so they don't have to work. Chapter 6 Section Ic of the Compendium is titled "The duty to work". In other words, the "Occupy" demands for all these freebies from the government are wrong.
I repeat, Iam not saying it is too late to turn things arround. What I am saying is that we have got to stand up & speak the truth to all sides of the political spectrum. The fact that your priest or Bishop is silent ois on the wrong side doesn't excuse you or me from our responsibility.
Also, the very real problems of the economy do not justify what the "Occupy" gang are demanding for a soluton either. & actions like this in Italia are never right.

At the Holy Mass for the New Evangelization in St. Peter's on Sunday, Papa Benedetto arrived & left using the same gold-colored platform Blessed John Paul II used in his final years of his papacy. OK it isn't quite the same as the sedia gesatoria last used by Pope John Paul I, but like that chair, the Pope is carried in & he is much more visible as well.

Media Bias At Its Worst, As Pointed Out By Laura Ingraham



Last Tuesday, 11 Oct 2011, Laura Ingraham was the guest speaker at the Vitae Foundation’s 16th Annual Pro-Life Benefit Dinner in Kansas City. As a part of her speech she pointed out the difference in how the media is covering the “Occupying Wall Street” protesters & the latest 40 Days for Life campaign. Or should I say how it is all over the prtoestors story & totally ignoring the 40 Days campaign. Of course that should be no surprize to anyone who knows the anti-life, pro-abortion bias of the media. After all why should they cover a story about an organization that has, as of this morning saved 205 babies from being aborted since it would undermine their agenda?
At the time she gave her speech last Tuesday the count stood at 122 babies. Talking about those stories behind each child she said “These are amazing stories of lives being changed! People are going into a clinic for one thing and leaving with minds being changed, maybe being handed a pamphlet or thinking about the Vitae billboard they saw earlier in the day about other choices. They go into the clinics, and they make a different choice. And then they go on and say, ‘My goodness, I have a life here. This is my DNA, this is my child!’ These are the stories that the dinosaur media will not cover.”
She went on to explain why the media won’t touch these types of stories. “They won’t cover them for a reason. Because the more people hear of these stories and the more these stories get out, the polls start to change. The polls start to move in a pro-life direction.” & as I pointed out, that undermines the MSM agenda to promote abortion.
Laura Ingraham also praised Vitae for the work it does using mass media campaigns to reach women facing unplanned pregnancies & to create more powerful stories of lives saved. “The work of Vitae nation-wide, using the media to get an alternative message out to young women and young men who are bombarded with only one message—Vitae’s work is more essential now than it’s ever been.”
The Vitae Foundation is begining its 20th year. Vitae is a non-profit, educational organization that focuses on using research-based messaging to educate the public about the value & sanctity of human life. They work at restoring this value as a core belief in the American culture. & naturally they work at reducing the number of abortions. Vitae subscribes to the belief that our Founding Fathers held: “That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” (See my recent posts on Herman Cain & Ron Paul that talk about their having this same viewpoint.)
Vitae gets their message out through billboards as well as TV ads. 1 of their projects,Vitae’s Only You TV commercial (below), will air locally on 7 cable networks on the most watched programs of Vitae’s target audience, such as the popular MTV shows “16 & Pregnant” and “Teen Mom.” (For those who aren't aware of it, most cable companies sell local comercial time on many of the most popular cable networks that preempts the national ad.) Talking about this to the people at the dinner, Vitae Vice President Anne Carmichael explained why they were doing so. “We bought ads in strategic cable zones to round out this year’s campaign. We’re targeting key neighborhoods to reach pregnant women in need before the abortion industry does.” The commercial as well as the current billboard campaign will direct women to The Women’s Clinic of Kansas City, with locations in Independence & Grandview.
The Main Stream Media will continue to ignore the truth about abortion & give very little coverage to the positives of the Pro-life movement. These days, however, they are not the only game in town. People are also becoming more & more aware of how the MSM is biased & not accurately reporting the news. As a result they are looking elsewhere for the accurate information. There are plenty of oportunities in the mass media for them to find it. Vitae is 1 of those stepping up to provide the accurate information.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy! Rockford Abortion Mill Shut Down Indefinitely for Health Violations

The sound you hear is that of the angels rejoicing at the news that, for now, 1 of the most visible proofs of the demonic roots of abortion has been shut down FOR HEALTH VIOLATIONS. While this may not be permanant, it means that for now many unborn babies in the Rockford area will no longer be in danger. It is also more proof that the abortion industry claim that they want women to have safe abortions is an out & out lie. In fact, the back alley abortions that the abortion industry holds up as unsafe but actually took place in doctors' offices were a lot safer for women.
I have reported many times before about this place & the pure evil that it is. I have mentioned how at least 1 alderman, Karen Elyea (11th Ward), has done her best to abet Webster in keeping this place going & to silence pro-lifers. (Click here for more Pro-Life Corner posts about her.)It will be interesting to see if she has any comments about this.
As I said, this may just be temporary, but it is another sign that the tide is turning. & except for those sold out to the "culture of death", a blind eye will no longer be turned toward the industry to allow it to get away with all the evils they are doing.
It is also an answer to the many, many prayers that have been offered by the Pro-Lifers at the site.

Notorious Rockford Abortion Mill License Suspended Indefinitely By The State Of Illinois!
Rockford, Il – (ProLifeCorner.com) – 9-30-2011 – by James - The Northern Illinois Women's Center abortion mill in Rockford that is nationally known for the signs of racism and bigotry it has displayed and for the unsanitary conditions inside had its licenses indefinitely suspended by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
According to the suspension notice released by the Illinois Department of Public Health on September 30, 2011, “the department had found conditions at the facility that are a direct threat to the public interest, health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action.”
Rockford area pro-life activists have known of the horrific conditions inside of this clinic for years. Now even the state of Illinois has recognized the dangerous conditions inside this clinic as a "direct threat to public health, safety, and welfare."
We don't know how long this abortion mill will be closed but we do know that finally the women and children of Rockford will have some protection from an abortion mill that is known for its dangerous conditions and celebrating abortion as some kind of demonic victory over God.
Below are listed some of the frightening violations documented by the State of Illinois about Rockford's abortion mill in a June 2011 report;
The Northern Illinois Women's Center did NOT meet the requirement of a sanitary facility.
It was determined "that 3 of 3 operating rooms inspected failed to ensure a sanitary environment."
NIWC failed to prevent potential contamination of clean equipment.
Gynecological cannula's were stained with a "brown substance!" (Cannulas are surgical instruments inserted directly inside a mother.)
Shoes were stored inside an open box of surgical gloves.
Operating room #1 contained a box of opened surgical gloves stained with a dried brown substance.
The equipment used to sterilize medical instruments, called an autoclave, failed biological testing on at least two occasions! (An autoclave is an instrument used to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure, saturated steam at 121 °C for about 15–20 minutes, depending on the size of the load and the contents.) The autoclave should be tested weekly - they went for 4 months between testing and then failed. That means that at some time prior to testing, the autoclave stopped sterilizing. If it had been tested weekly, then only a few patients would have been exposed to contaminated instruments before the failure was noted. By going so long, they exposed countless women to potential disease. If the instruments were used twice a week, then possibly 32 women were endangered (16 weeks times twice a week) with EACH instrument pack.
NIWC failed to meet the requirement that a qualified Registered Nurse be present in the operating room. This dangerous and illegal situation went on for well over three years.
NIWC did not have an RN in the operating room for over three years. It didn't even have one on the payroll. There was no "director of nurses" to oversee care. Unqualified and unlicensed personal were doing the work of a professional nurse.
NIWC failed to document who was accompanying a patient when leaving the facility post-surgical procedure. It is possible that women were left to care for themselves after surgery.
Numerous instances of failing to meet state requirements in record keeping.
Failure to ensure physical exams was documented. NIWC also failed to ensure development and review of policies and procedures.
From "brown substances" on surgical equipment and gloves, to not having a qualified nursing staff, to equipment used to sterilize surgical instruments not working properly, this report is an indictment of the very dangerous and disgusting conditions that have existed inside the Rockford abortion mill for a long time.
We have seen racism, bigotry, and grotesque hatred for God and human life displayed in the windows of this clinic building for years. It seems this place is as careless, unprofessional, alarming, and dangerous on the inside as it is on the outside.
A local nurse who read the report from the Illinois Dept of Public Health said, "Yet, even with all these violations and without a registered nurse in their employ, they were open for business the very next day. What does it take for the IDPH to shut this place down? Do women really deserve this quality of medical care?"

The June 2011 report from the Illinois Department of Public Health Division of Health Standards documented numerous disturbing and possibly dangerous violations inside of the Rockford abortion mill.
