That is exactly what they want to do, in Katowice, Poland. They want to errect a statue to the person that they believe is a "symbol of liberty," President Ronald Reagan according to a report from the Polish news agency PAP.
Former anti-communist regime activists sent a letter to the mayor of Katowice with the request. They want this statue to be errected in place of a Soviet era monument. They said that he "deserved to become the centrepiece of the city's Freedom Square, replacing a monument to the Soviet troops who drove out the occupying Nazis in 1945." & they want the square renamed the "Ronald Reagan Freedom Square."
City hall spokesman Waldemar Bojarun said the issue would be considered by the city's councillers. He went on to say that the statue would cost an estimated 500,000 zlotys (128,000 euros, 168,000 dollars) but that the city had "other pressing needs" to consider.
This would not be the only statue of the late president to be errected in Poland. Plans are underway to errect a statue in Warsaw using private funds.
