In 1977 I graduated from college. In July, after sharing a place for a while, I moved into my own apartment. That apartment was at 308 Hill St. I was in Apt 3. There was an elderly widow living in Apt 1. All my neighbors were people that would be just as shocked as I was to see this morning's front page of the Telegraph Herald. The 2ndary headline above the fold read Tactical response team serves arrest warrant. Below the headline is a picture of a member of the team aiming his gun at the apartment building where they were serving the warrant. Below that picture is a picture of the building, the very same place I moved into 30 yrs ago. The apartment they were serving the warrant to was Apt 1.
WOW!!!!!! Talk about a shock! & more to come. They were there because “Based on intelligence we had gathered, we had a reason for concern about weapons in the apartment,” the article said quoting Dubuque Assistant Police Chief Terry Tobin. Definitely not something that you would of expected back then.
They were there to arrest Yahya A. Karim. He is being "held on a warrant for driving under suspension and a violation of a court order barring him from the Hill Street location.
The police tactical team — wearing helmets and fatigues and sporting military style rifles and riot shields — entered the apartment shortly after Karim’s arrest."
Later the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at the apartment but found nothing.
This whole thing is like a scene from 1 of my favorite TV series from that time, Hill Street Blues, was actually taking place there. All that were missing was Capt. Frank Furillo, Lt. Howard Hunter & Joyce Davenport showing up as PD.
