Donald "Duck" Dunn
On 13 May 2012, one of the Rock & Roll greats, Donald "Duck" Dunn passed away at the age of 70. He had finished a performance at the Blue Note night club in Tokyo a few hours early. He was 70 years old. He had been touring with Stever Cropper & Eddie Floyd.
Depending on the generation you are talking to, the band Donald "Duck" Dunn is most identified with is either Booker T & the M.G.s or The Blues Brothers Band. Interestingly enough, in both bands he was associated with Steve Cropper. Dunn didn't join MGs until after their signature tune, Green Onions, was recorded, but he did play it enough to be rightly identified with it.
& while those are the 2 groups he is most associated with Dunn's legacy is spread far & wide beyond those 2 groups. He also played for such greats as Otis Redding, Neil Youg, Sam & Dave, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton & Rod Stewart, among many others. He was the featured bass player for Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty's "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" single.
In 1992, as a part of Booker T & the M.G.s he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Here then is a small sample of the great music he left us:
Green Onions
Soul Limbo
Dock of the Bay
Sweet Home Chicago
& no salute would be complete without his backing up the great Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher
I dug out the DVD & watched it last nite. Couldn't help but think how there is no way they would let him get away with smoking that pipe on stage these days.
Sono Italiano-americano. I am a member of St Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church. I am an advisor to Alpha Phi Omega & College Republicans at Loras College. I am a member of the Dubuque Co. Republican Central Committee. I have been involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement since 1974. For me the overriding issue of the day is defending the preborn & upholding their right to life. If we don't value life before birth, we devalue it after birth. Life is a gift from God. This is why I am a supporter of the work that Dubuque County Right to Life does in my area. & that is why I am politically active. Our nation's laws need to be changed to protect all from conception to natural death.

RIP Mr. Dunn, from a fellow bass player. Always remember his big hair and pipe from The Blues brothers.
