A few days ago Whispers in the Logia put up a post with the following title: Holy Fulton: Amid Dispute Over Resting Place, Peoria Halts Sheen Sainthood. The gist of the story was the ongoing debate about where the remains of Bishop Sheen should end up. Archbishop Jenky wants them to be returned to his original diocese of Peopia. Archbishop Dolan wants them to stay in New York. Given the fact that down through the centuries battles have been fought over where a saints remains end up this is not surprizing. The sailors of Bari taking St. Nicholas' away from the Orthodox monks at Myra in Turkey. Granted they could claim concerns about the impending Muslim conquest. But that isn't the point. & there are many others I could mention as well.
In a sense, Archbishop Sheen's burial in New York rather than Rochester where he was Bishop before he retired is a bit unusual. Technically, arguements for all 3 locations can be made.
However reading this story brought to mind what happenned when Archbishop Sheen had finished his education & asked his Bishop which 1 of 2 posts he should take. Bishop Edmund Michael Dunne told him to return to the Peoria diocese & become a pastor at a parish. Then Fr. Sheen obeyed his Bishop & returned to the Peori Diocese. Archbishop Sheen admitted that is why God was later able to use him as he did.
So, if you ask me, while I can understand that Archbishop Sheen spent a large part of his life in New York & was an auxiliary Bishop of the New York Diocese during his time on TV, I think that Peoria has the best claim on being his final resting place. & I suspect that Archbishop Sheen would say the same.
