OK, he didn't exactly claim he was a better Catholic per se, but his comments on what the USCCB has said about not supporting any health care reform that includes abortion pretty much does that.
“I can’t understand for the life of me how the Catholic Church could be against the biggest social justice issue of our time, where the very dignity of the human person is being respected by the fact that we’re caring and giving health care to the human person--that right now we have 50 million people who are uninsured.
Actually, the real red herring is the claim that Kennedy is making that by opposing abortion in health care that the USCCB is opposed to health care reform. What Kennedy said is a lie straight out of hell. Kennedy is another prime example of someone who claims to be Catholic & are anything but.
1st of all, he is trying to say that opposing abortion is opposing health care reform. That is a lie. He is creating a false dichotomy. He is saying that unless health care reform covers abortion it is not health care reform. He knows damn well that the Catholic Church is not opposed to health care reform, but abortion. He is trying to hide that fact by being self-righteous. In doing so he uis trying to ensure that the blood of untold millions more will be on his hands.
Then the hypocricy of claiming dignity of life is being denied while his support of abortion has denied that very dignity to over 40 million unborn human beings every year is just sickening.
& where did he get the 50 million uninsured number from? It has been proven that even the 40 million number is inflated. & it ignores the fact that included in what is at most 15 million people includes a lot of people who don't want health insurance. But why let a lie get in the way of your agenda?
That last bit is the most egregious of all. He knows the Catholic Church is pro-life. He knows that the Catholic Bishops support real health care reform.
Then we get to this bit "because it’s going to provide health care that are going to keep people alive". He knows damn well that what they are opposed to is paying for abortion under the guise of health care. Again how is killing someone & calling it health care keeping people alive. Abortion is murder. It is taking away life. & he knows it.
& he knows the real dissent is from him & his fellow Catholics in Name Only who are the real source of discord. Rather than take the blame, he is trying to push it off onto the Bishops. In this sense he is a modern day Pilate trying to wash his hands of the blood of the unborn, elderly & others who will die under what he calls health care.
This is another prong in the attack like that we saw in Time Magazine (Time Magazine's Latest Attack on the Catholic Church). It is an attempt to make the Church the villian rather than admitting they are at fault. They are POed because this time arround the USCCB isn't going to provide them with the cover that it has in the past.
Kennedy's Bishop in Rhode Island didn't waste any time in responding to Kennedy's calumny. Bishop Thomas J. Tobin, Diocese of Providence, had the following response to Kennedy's attack. & yes, they used the term attack to describe Kennedy's actions. This response gives further proof that Kennedy was intentionally misrepresenting things. I know Bishop Tobin has been very vocal in his criticism of Obama's support of abortion. & don't forget, Bishop Tobin did call Archbishop Weakland a dissident. So, I know that he has been very straight forward with Kennedy about what the USCCB will & won't support. Thus, I know that Kennedy intentionally lied & misrepresented the facts.: Statement of Bishop Tobin in Response to Congressman Kennedy’s Attack on Catholic Church
(PROVIDENCE, R.I.)-The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, today issued the following statement in response to a Cybercast News Service article that reported: Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I) told CNSNews.com that the Catholic Church is doing nothing but fanning “the flames of dissent and discord” by taking the position that it will oppose the health-care reform bill under consideration in Congress unless it is amended to explicitly prohibit funding of abortion.
“Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s statement about the Catholic Church’s position on health care reform is irresponsible and ignorant of the facts. But the Congressman is correct in stating that “he can’t understand.” He got that part right.
As I wrote to Congressman Kennedy and other members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation recently, the Bishops of the United States are indeed in favor of comprehensive health care reform and have been for many years. But we are adamantly opposed to health care legislation that threatens the life of unborn children, requires taxpayers to pay for abortion, rations health care, or compromises the conscience of individuals.
Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the State of Rhode Island. I believe the Congressman owes us an apology for his irresponsible comments. It is my fervent hope and prayer that he will find a way to provide more effective and morally responsible leadership for our state.”
