Honestly, I can only describe the Time Magazine article
Will the Church Try to Block Health Reform? by Amy Sullivan as a blatent attack on the catholic Church using half truths & lies to promote Obama's pro-abortion health care scheme.
From the openning paragraph it tries to create a false dichotomy between the USCCB's call for health care reform with recent statements about abortion concerns. & while admitting that it abortion concerns were expected, the article is quick to turn the blame from where it completely lies to the USCCB
"The fact that disputes over abortion coverage remain an obstacle at this point in the process — more than two dozen pro-life House Democrats have also vowed to vote against reform legislation because of it — might suggest that the White House dropped the ball. But while Obama's outreach to the USCCB has left much to be desired, the bishops deserve a fair share of the blame for the continuing stalemate. If anything, their inconsistent approach to the issue created confusion that has hampered Democratic attempts to accommodate their concerns." (emphasis mine)
What in the ....????
There is absolutely no inconsistancy. They have made it clear from the start that abortion is a non-starter when it comes to health care reform. The problem is that Obama & the Catholics in Name Only in his administration & Congress thought they could pull 1 over Bishops like Cardinal Rigali & those in the Pro-life movement. & as Deal Hudson points out, they may have been abetted by traitors from within the USCCB, some of the staff (
Is the USCCB Responsible for the Capps Amendment?).
There has been no inconsistancy by the key Bishops. It is wishful thinking on the part of the Pro-abortion Dems that the Capps Amendment would be blindly accepted rather than recognized for the fraud it was. So instead of admitting they got caught, they blame Cardinal Rigali.
Did they really expect that Rigali would turn a blind eye to indirect funding of abortion just because Rigali used the term direct funding originally? if they did, it shows how deluded they were, not that Rigali is being inconsistant.
I will admit that some individual Bishops have sent mixed messages. Some, like Cardinal Mahony have all but said abortion doesn't matter, go ahead & keep killing the unborn. & some people in the USCCB may have been less than forward in not disabusing those trying to hide abortion in the bill of their wrong interpretation. But many Bishops & the Pro-life movement refuse to be taken in.
No, it was not the Catholic Bishops who negotiated in bad-faith. It was Obama & the rest who lied from day 1. They are the ones to blame.
I also found Ms. Sullivan's last paragraph to be particularly offensive.
"If the Administration and congressional Democrats can't find a way to appease the USCCB — and their appetite for compromise may be limited given the sense that the standard has shifted — the bishops could find themselves openly opposing a cause they have long championed. If that happens, they will have themselves to blame as much as anyone else." (emphasis mine)
To use the term "appease" is an attempt to demean & marginalize the USCCB by making it sound like they are to blame for the problems. It makes it sound like they are holding health care hostage.
Asd for the Dems appetite for compromise, what appetite? They have lied from day 1 & have not offered a single opportunity to compromise evidenced by their unwillingness the even let any amendment come up that would honestly deal with the USCCB's concerns regarding abortion. Arrogance would be a better word for the Dems behavior.
& no, the standard has shifted either. The only thing is, the Dems have found that the USCCB wouldn't let it be shifted to give the Dems the ability to cover abortion.
As for the bit about opposing a cause they championed, it isn't the cause they will be opposing, despite what she claims. It is the means. & she knows that, the Dems know that, Obama knows that. & if we don't get health care reform, the blame will lie at their feet, not that of the USCCB.
This article was a disgusting attempt to slander Rigali & the pro-life movement while painting the real villians as the victims. & to hide behind people like Sr. Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association (CHA) won't wash either.
Watching her last 2 appearances on The World Over left me more convinved than ever that her claims to be opposed to abortion coverage are bogus. The way she tried to dance arround Raymond Arroyo's questions was disgusting. Raymond Arroyo wouldn't let her, putting her on the spot & showing how disingenuous she was being.
Despite her claims to the contrary, her actions have shown that she will be willing to toss out a ban on abortion in order to help the Dems create a socialized medicine system that will force Catholic Hospitals to cease to be Catholic so they can continue to operate. Actually, that isn't quite true. Most Catholic hospitals ceased to be Catholic a long time ago. They operate like a business, not the charitable insitutions they were created to be. The CHA's behavior in failing to be openly opposed to abortion. & a line in Sullivan's article doesn't exactly do anything to disprove that fact. "They point out that the Catholic Health Association, which represents more than 1,200 Catholic health systems and facilities, has been more encouraging of Democratic proposals (although the CHA has yet to endorsed any bill)." The reality is, the only thing the Dems see as encouragement is when you are willing to turn a blind eye to abortion coverage. & Sr. Carol appears very willing to do that for 30 pieces of silver.
Time is lying about what is really happenning, just as Obama lied to Papa Benedetto. It is just more proof of how deep in Obama's pocket the main stream media is. & how desperate they are to push through what is anything but real health care reform before too many people realize the truth.
