While I am a devout Catholic, am proud of my state, Iowa, & strongly believe that Iowa deserves to be 1st in the nation in the Presidential Sweepstakes, a statement on the subject made by 1 of the candidates campaign here in Iowa over Labor Day weekend is, to say the least, something that even I am not sure about.
& what is even more bizarre is that it was a Democratic candidate that said it.
Speaking in Sioux City on Monday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson made this statement: "Iowa, for good reason, for constitutional reasons, for reasons related to the Lord, should be the first caucus and primary. "
OK????
Good reason I buy.
Constitutional reasons, where? No where in the Preamble or 8 Articles of the Cosntitution or any of the 27 Amendments is there anything that says Iowa must, let alone should, go 1st. It would be nice, but it just isn't so. (Is this another proof of how poorly the left knows what really is in our Constitution, let alone respects it?)
Reasons related to the Lord?
I have to start out by saying that since this was said by a Dem it will be a short blip of humor for pundants & late nite talk show monologues. But can you imagine what the Dems, the ACLU & all the other other usual suspects would have been screaming if President Bush had said this.
& I know that Iowa was created by God for us to know what Heaven is like ("Is this Heaven? No! It's IOWA!).
It would be nice if we could claim that God definitely wants Iowa to remain 1st. & maybe, just maybe, it is true that it is God's perfect will that we should be 1st. (I would like to hink so.) But until I get a little more than what appears to be a bit of off-the cuff pandering by a candidate looking for votes, I'll wait to say that it is definitively true. Till then I'll stick with just "PROBABLY!" ; P
