Archbishop Myers Tells Seton Hall to Clean Up Its Act

That Seton Hall even reached this point is just 1 more bit of evidence of how lax the American Bishops have let things get. 1st by tolerating the Land-O-Lakes agreement* in 1967 & then when Pope John Paul sent out Ex Corde Ecclesia, by ignoring & thten doing all they could to undermine its implimentation. Like- the college I work at, Seton Hall is a diocesan university. What that means is that technically, the diocese owns it, but because of Land-O-Lakes they both have Boards that have not held fast to upholding Catholic teaching & true Catholic identity.
Another puzzle is why was this class approved, esp after W. King Mott had previously been demoted or that Mott is even there in the 1st place after the previous incident is again more evidence of the damage done by Land-O-Lakes & allowed by the Bishops.
I'm not sure if Mott has tenure since it lists his being an associate professor only since 2006 & an associate prof from 1999-2001. If he has tenure it would make it harder, but not impossible to fire him. Otherwise, he has held various administrative roles over the years. Under his bio on the Seton website, he includes as 1 of his Academic fields gender/queer theory. Under Publications and Academic Distinctions he includes the pro-abortion Amnesty International, as well as Lambda Legal & the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS). Again, why was he ever put in a position of autholirty in the 1st place?
That last is a rhetorical question as, speaking from personal experince, DBQ has Clarke College which is about on the same page as Seton. & as I said, here at the college I work for many things that run counter to what Ex Corde & Papa Benedetto pointed out a couple years ago, a Catholic College should be.
While I applaud Archbishop Myers actions, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully he will keep the pressure up until Seton Hall cleans up completely. & if not, he can & should take away from Seton Hall the priviledge to call itself Catholic.

Newark Abp. Rips Seton Hall Same-Sex 'Marriage' Course
By Kathleen Gilbert
NEWARK, New Jersey, April 30, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a statement released Friday, Archbishop John J. Myers of Newark slammed a proposed course on same-sex "marriage" to be offered at Seton Hall University by a homosexualist professor. Myers says that the course is "not in synch" with Catholic teaching, and that the university's Board of Trustees have urged officials "to take whatever action is required under the law to protect the Catholicity of this university."
The university newspaper The Setonian reported earlier this month that W. King Mott, an open homosexual who was once demoted by the university for speaking out against Catholic teaching on marriage, would be offering a course that he claims would teach about homosexual "marriage" "from an academic perspective."
"As the shepherd of the Archdiocese of Newark, I am responsible for maintaining the Catholic identity of all Church institutions and organizations within the Archdiocese, and for ensuring authentic and orthodox Catholic teaching in all educational institutions and parishes," stated the archbishop.
"That responsibility extends to our Catholic elementary and high schools, to our parish religious education programs for both adults and children, and to the Catholic colleges and university operating within my jurisdiction. "Recent news that a course on same-sex marriage is proposed for the fall schedule at Seton Hall University troubles me greatly."
Myers reaffirmed that the teaching of the Catholic Church holds "that marriage is a union of man and woman, reflecting the complementarity of the sexes." "That teaching precedes any societal connotation of marriage, and is based on natural law," he stated.
"This proposed course seeks to promote as legitimate a train of thought that is contrary to what the Church teaches. As a result, the course is not in synch with Catholic teaching."
According to Myers, Seton Hall's Board of Trustees have already asked the Board of Regents "to investigate the matter of this proposed course, and to take whatever action is required under the law to protect the Catholicity of this university." The archbishop quoted Pope Benedict XVI's address to U.S. Catholic educators two years ago during his visit to the United States, in which the pope said: “Teachers and administrators, whether in universities or schools, have the duty and privilege to ensure that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice. This requires that public witness to the way of Christ, as found in the Gospel and upheld by the Church's Magisterium, shapes all aspects of an institution's life, both inside and outside the classroom.”

Catholic Seton Hall U. to Offer Gay 'Marriage' Course by Homosexualist Prof
______________
* The Land-O-Lakes statement was drawn up and signed by a group of Catholic educators led by University of Notre Dame president Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, CSC (& we are seeing the rotten fruit of that at ND). Basicly it said that these colleges were American 1st & Catholic 2nd only when it didn't interfer with their being sold out to American culture. It took the relativistic view that the Catholic teachings & doctrines were just 1 of many possible truths, not the TRUTH as it really is. & by doing that they failed to contribute to the nation's intellectual life by rejecting the 1 thing it had to offer that that intellectual life needed, the TRUTH.

Thanks, many thanks for this commentary and article about Seton Hall University. For some reason, I always though it was a thoroughly orthodox Catholic educational institution. My hero Fr. Stanley Jaki taught there, or was affiliated at least, for many years.

So much good stuff on this blog...

TH2, I've learned that a orthodox fcaulty member or 2 does not always mean the whole college is truly Catholic. A prime example is Boston College. It has Peter Kreeft who is good. & a couple others who are on the right track. But it is mostly a haven for heritcal theologans & philosophers.

Won't even go into the Catholic college I work at.
