PP Director Resigns

I have been seeing the good news trumpetted far & wide about the resignation of Abby Johnson (right with Shawn Carney executive director of the Campaign for Life) as the director of the Planned Parenthood center in Bryan, TX. (Home of Texas A&M) Johnson said she resigned because she realized she wanted to leave, after watching an ultrasound of an abortion procedure.

In September she watched a fetus "crumple" as it was vacuumed out of a patient's uterus. "When I was working at Planned Parenthood I was extremely pro-choice," Johnson told FoxNews.com. But after seeing the internal workings of the procedure for the first time on an ultrasound monitor, "I would say there was a definite conversion in my heart ... a spiritual conversion."
"I just thought I can't do this anymore, and it was just like a flash that hit me and I thought that's it." She had worked for PP for 8 years & been director of Bryan PP for 2 years. She resigned on 6 October.
"I feel so pure in heart (since leaving). I don't have this guilt, I don't have this burden on me anymore that's how I know this conversion was a spiritual conversion." She has yet to find another job. Instead she has been spending time with her 3 year old. She has also become involved with the Coalition For Life, the pro-life group with a building down the street from Planned Parenthood. Coalition volunteers can regularly be seen praying on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood. & she is now 1 of them.
2 things stood out for me.
The 1st was that it was watching an ultrasound that gave her the push over the edge & led her to finally decide to quite. I have talked several times about how effective ultrasounds are in convincing women to not have an abortion. There are several groups, like Project Ultrasound (link in column at right) that are working to get them to as many pregnancy centers as possible.
This also shows how important projects like Priests for Life's "Is This What You Mean by Abortion?" project that uses Abortion Photos are. People need to see the truth. Yes, those pictures are not comfortable to look at. But they require us to face something we would rather ignore, the ugly truth about what an abortion really does.
The 2nd is what she said about Planned Parenthood's business philosophy. They told her to try to bring more abortions in the door. "The money wasn't in family planning, the money wasn't in prevention, the money was in abortion and so I had a problem with that," said Johnson. "Every meeting that we had was, 'We don't have enough money, we don't have enough money — we've got to keep these abortions coming.' It's a very lucrative business and that's why they want to increase numbers."
According to Fox News Johnson estimated that each abortion could net the branch about $350, adding up to more than $10,000 a month. "The majority of the money was going to the facility," she said. This is exactly what I & many other people have been saying for a long time. PP isn't about women, it isn't about anything but making money & especially making it by doing abortions.
I am sure that the leadership of PP is no more happy about this latest confirmation of the facts of how they really operate than they have been over all the revelations of cover-ups of rape, incest etc that have come out.
In fact they have already fired the 1st shot. Last Friday both Johnson and the Coalition For Life were issued temporary restraining orders filed by Planned Parenthood. Rochelle Tafolla, a Planned Parenthood spokesperson issued the following statement: "We regret being forced to turn to the courts to protect the safety and confidentiality of our clients and staff, however, in this instance it is absolutely necessary." The order contends that Planned Parenthood would be irreparably harmed by the disclosure of certain information, but does not bar Johnson or Coalition For Life volunteers from the premises. A hearing for the restraining order has been set for 10 November.
Johnson admiits to being puzzled as she had no plans to release any sensitive information about her former patients at the clinic. That she wouldn't is to be expected. Even though abortion is morally wrong, it still wouldn't be ethical for her to say anything about patients, esp since HIPPA & other laws prevent her from doing so. I think it says more about the ethics of PP & what they are afraid she might say that would shine the light of truth on how PP actually operates. Those things they are trying to keep hidden are what they are really afraid of as it would cause PP irreperable harm. More coverups of rapes, incest? Overcharging the state for Medicaid? That is probably closer to the truth than any concerns PP claims to have about the patients. But if the employees have done something illegal, of course PP wants to keep that buried.

FYI: This was the site of the 1st 40 Days for Life campaign in the fall of 2004. This shows the importance that prayer plays in changing people's hearts. It also shows the importance of us not giving up but persevering instead.
