He's Got That Right, They ARE Thugs
LONDON, December 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Nigel Farage, spokesman for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) and Member of the European Parliament for Southeast England, stated recently that an attack by European MEPs on incoming Czech president Vaclav Klaus revealed “the true face of this modern day European Union” as “a thug and a bully” and a union that “despises democracy” and treats it “with contempt.”
In a UK Parliamentary debate on the French EU Presidency, Farage took EU President Nicholas Sarkozy to task for wanting “more power for the Union” and the Lisbon Treaty, and challenged French EU President Nicholas Sarkosy to join him in condemning the “absolutely appalling treatment” of incoming Czech EU President Vaclav Klaus.
Farage recounted the details of the bizarre December 5 meeting in Prague between members of the European Parliament and its President, Kans Gert Poettering, and incoming EU President Klaus. Despite the Czech policy to retain Prague Castle as a symbol of the Czech state and not of Europe, MEP Danny Cohn-Bendit told Klaus “I don’t care about your opinions,” and, Farage recounted, “put the European flag on President Klaus’s desk and told him to fly it from the castle.”
The London Telegraph reported Tuesday that Sarkozy called the Czech refusal to fly the European flag “wounding and outrageous” and promised Mr. Poettering “the full support of the French president.”
Farage warned that the Parliamentary intimidation of Klaus on the flag and the Lisbon Treaty was “a very dangerous step for the Union to be taking,” and compared Cohn-Bendit to “a German official from seventy years ago, or a Soviet official from twenty years ago.”
“Danny the libertarian who is now the authoritarian, the man who has turned into everything he said he was opposed forty years ago, and this is the face, Mr. Sarkozy, of the European Union,” said Farage.
Farage tied this latest incident to other troubling signs that indicate that the EU “despises democracy” and “cannot cope with any alternative point of view.” Among these are PES Leader Martin Schultz’s statement that a no vote on the Lisbon Treaty “will lead to fascism, and we must not bow to populism,” Danny Cohn-Bendit’s parliamentary comments that opponents of the Lisbon Treaty are “mentally ill,” and MEP Brian Crowley’s insistence that “the Irish wish for the Lisbon Treaty,” even though they soundly rejected it in a referendum.
“Well, I’m sorry, old son, but they said no. Please accept the result!” Farage said in response to Crowley.
Farage concluded, “Mr. Sarkozy is this the kind of union that you want, or will you join me in condemning the absolutely appalling treatment of President Klaus in Prague last week?”
Despite Sarkozy’s conservative record in France, he supports the Lisbon Treaty, which critics say would impose a socially Leftist agenda on all the EU countries, forcing them to overturn pro-life and pro-family policies.
