On this day in 1974 Cass Elliot (nee Ellen Naomi Cohen) passed as a result of "heart failure due to fatty myocardial degeneration due to obesity" in her London hotel room. (Sadly, to this day the false rumor about her chocking to death still floats around.) She had 1 daughter, Owen Vanessa Elliot.
I just recently learned that she auditioned for the roll that made Barbra Streisand a star, Miss Marmelstein in I Can Get It for You Wholesale. Talk about "What If????"
For me, she was The Mamas & the Papas. They made her, she made them. Their 4 voices blended as perfectly as possible.
So here is a little salute to her:
Dream A Little Dream of Me
w/ Tommy Smothers
Make Your Own Kind of Music
Leaving on a Jet Plane
w/John Denver
The Mamas & the Papas Montage
& finally, the big hit that was their bio:
Creeque Alley
