According to a report from Reuters (Italians throng Vatican to support silenced Pope) tens of thousands of people (students, politicians and ordinary Romans) showed up for Papa Benedetto's Sunday Angelus address. This was a much larger crowd than usual.
Papa Benedetto greeting the cheering crowds & said: "Thank you all for this show of solidarity." Later he talked about his years as a theology professor. "I encourage all of you dear university students to always respect the opinions of others and to seek, with a liberal and responsible spirit, truth and righteousness," said the Pontiff.
Mons. Mauro Parmeggiani of the Rome diocese pointed out the real purpose of the vicar of Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini's call for people to show up Sunday. "We only wish to unite in prayers with the Pope," he said. "This is not a political demonstration and must not be used for political ends."
Unfortunately some people still don't get it. Their hatred for God & the Church He founded was shown in the comments they made about Sunday's activities. For instance, a leftist (no surprize to me) member of parliament, Franco Grillini, a gay rights activist (another no surprize to me), had this to say: "politicians kissing the shoes of the Pontiff" showed "a painful lack of political autonomy".
My advice to them: "GET OVER IT!" This wasn't toadying, it was simply showing the respect for others that you clearly lack for anyone who doesn't kiss the part of the anatomy you sit on!
VIVA IL PAPA!!!!!
