I am referring to the fact that today is Squirrel Appreciation Day*.
Yes, today is the day we stop to appreciate all the good things squirrels have done for us (what they do to bird feeders & some gardens excepted). They are entertaining to watch. Thanks to their burying the nuts they find, they help ensure new batches of trees spring up from the nuts they forgot the location of.
But perhaps the most important, lasting effect they have had upon our culture is that, without squirrels, we would never have had that All-American hero from Frostbite Falls, MN, Rocket J. Squirrel.
That alone ensures that we should appreciate them. Even though today is also Hugging Day, I don't recommend that you hug one. I doubt if they would appreciate it.

* Just a reminder to you people who a freaking out about this being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let me remind you that it is a floating holiday, tied in the 3rd Monday of January, not a specific date.
