Wednesday afternoon, as expected, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed into law what basicly amounts to a gag law to silence Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the city from telling the truth about abortion as well as providing women with the facts they need to make a true choice. It could also be looked upon as the city providing an unfair competitive advantage to the abortion industry.
The law is scheduled to go into effect in 120 days.
You can be sure that this will go to court. The American Center for Law and Justice, a pro-life law firm, made it clear that they would file a lawsuit against the city if Bloomberg signed the bill into law. But, before doing so, it delivered a letter to the mayor on behalf of
EMC FrontLine Pregnancy Centers, a chain of a dozen pregnancy centers in the Big Apple, asking for a formal hearing on the ordinance required under city statutes which the city council never did.
Bloomberg held a public signing ceremony for the bill. At it he parrotted the abortion industry's lies about CPCs. He said “To ensure that women are fully informed of the services provided by pregnancy service centers, this bill requires the centers to inform their clients whether they have a licensed medical provider on staff and disclose whether they provide certain pregnancy-related services or not. This bill also requires centers to provide confidentiality protections for their clients’ personal and health information.” Of course, the same full disclosure is NOT required of any abortion clinic operating in the "Rotting Apple" that NYC has now become.
I say that in part because of 1 interesting twist in the law. It forbids pregnancy centers from reporting sex abuse without a child’s consent. The only exceptions are in cases of children 12 or younger who are victims of incest. Talk about giving a fiat to PP's practice of aiding & abetting the coverup of rape & incest.
Chris Slattery, the head of the EMC pregnancy center group said that “EMC FrontLine is planning to sue the City of New York next week seeking a preliminary injunction against the new Pregnancy Services regulation Bill signed into law by Mayor Mike Bloomberg, this afternoon. The law is a gross violation of our 1st and 14th Amendment rights, and we are buoyed by the second federal court decision declaring the 2nd similar CPC regulation bill in Montgomery County, Maryland, almost completely unconstitutional, just today.”
As Slattery pointed out, a federal court stuck down most of a Montgomery Co. law in Maryland. & not to long ago a Baltimore law similar to the NYC law was struck down as well as a violation of 1st amendment rights of the CPCs.
God willing the NYC law will be quickly struck down as well. This battle has just begun folks. PP, NARAL & the rest of the abortion industry hates CPCs because of the success they have in getting women to not have an abortion. That means PP et al loses a huge source of income. & they don't like it. It is that bottom line that is the real bottom line. Remember this the next time you hear someone talking about making abortion rare. The fact that the industry is doing all it can to deny women real choice & to increase the number of abortions rather than allow women places to go that do help reduce the number of abortions shows that any claims about making abortion rare are lies, pure & simple.
