Sometimes Fr. Barry and I (Fr. Parker) are asked about which magazines/newspapers are solidly Catholic, in sync with our Holy Father and the Mageisterium. Our personal list would include The National Catholic Register, Our Sunday Visitor, The Word Among Us, Magnificat, Lay Witness, and everything published by Ignatius Press
Our list of publications that Catholics would be wise to avoid include The National Catholic Reporter, America, U.S. Catholic and Commonweal. These frequently take positions at odds with Catholic moral teaching, our Holy Father and the Magisterium. Some publications of Ligouri Press are OK."
It is refreshing to have a priest or 2 out there that will be blunt about the heretic publications floating about. Of course, their Bishop, Thomas G. Doran, (Rockford Diocese) backs them up as well.
Sadly, on this side of the river, I know of at least 1 priest who puts out every one of the bad ones for the parishioners in the parish he is at. Of course, he wasn't to happy when Cardinal Ratzinger (Papa Benedetto) was elected Pope either. But he is more the rule when it comes to pushing the bad stuff.
The problem with Ligouri Press is sometimes it is hard to tell until it is too late. After using their "Advent and Christmas with Fulton J. Sheen" (still do) I ordered "Advent and Christmas with the Saints". Big mistake. The readings included some from the PC Priests for Inclusiveness gangs revision of the Bible. & that was only part of the problem. I have since put it away & refuse to use it. FYI, in its place I got a new book from Ignatius with Advent meditiations by Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C.* called "Come, Lord Jesus Meditations on the Art of Waiting" that is keyed into the Scripture readings at Mass & Liturgy of the Hours. It comes recommended by Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B. Prioress, Abbey of Regina Laudis & Alice Von Hildebrand (& now me).
