The Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (PPRM) office on the 300 block of North Bonaventure Avenue is currently scheduled to be closed at the end of this month.
The clinic has operated in various locations in the city since 1968. With the closure of the Planned Parenthood office in Trinidad, the nearest Planned Parenthood clinic is located to about 88.8 miles to the north in Pueblo at 955 West Highway 50.
Clients who had scheduled appointments at the Trinidad clinic after the final day of Sept. 30 are expected to be contacted by phone for rescheduling at other locations and dates. PPRM is also offering local clients a referral to the local reproductive healthcare provider of their choice.
Regarding the closing, PPRM Chief Executive Officer and President Vicki Cowart stated, “After a thorough and careful examination of the area’s demographics and available health care resources, we came to the conclusion that our core services do not align with the community’s most essential needs. Trinidad is a community with an excellent system of medical delivery and we are confident that its residents will continue to be well served and have their reproductive health care needs met.”
Asked if the closure of Trinidad’s clinic was part of a larger pattern of closure around the state, Monica McCafferty, PPRM’s media relations specialist, responded, “Definitely not; we still have 22 health centers throughout Colorado, and last year we served more than 123,000 men, women and teens. This was certainly a strategic business decision, and (it) will allow us to invest more resources into our other health centers.”
McCafferty named other Planned Parenthood health centers into which those resources will be directed as places like Colorado Springs and Glenwood Springs.
“We took a lot of factors into consideration: the population, its demographics, the availability of health care resource and the services we offer, and after careful examination of those, we really decided that the area’s demographics today don’t reflect a population that’s in need of our core services,” she said.
In February, the University of Wisconsin’s Population Health Institute ranked Las Animas County 54 out of 56 Colorado counties for overall health outcomes after examining the prevalence in the counties of factors that included teen birth rates and reported instances of sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia.
Alternative centers for reproductive care in the region cited by McCafferty included Mt. San Rafael Hospital, Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center in Walsenburg and the Pueblo Planned Parenthood clinic. Additionally, the Las Animas-Huerfano Counties District Health Department on South Benedicta Avenue in Trinidad hosts a family planning clinic. Services provided by the clinic include STD testing and treatment, pap smears, HIV testing, delayed exams for birth control, women’s annual exams, pregnancy testing and planning.
“We’re certainly confident that our clients can have their healthcare needs met,” McCafferty said.
