More Evidence That The Church's Teaching on IVF Is Right

Research is bringing to light evidence that the In Vitro-Fertilization process does harm to the child that manifests itself later in life. Carmen Sapienza, professor of pathology at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia has said that people conceived through IVF treatment should be monitored for the early onset of high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancers before the age of 50. This statement is being made because doctors have identified subtle genetic changes in those conceived by IVF that may raise the risk of particular medical conditions in later life. Even though they are born healthy "They have a much higher frequency of being low birthweight and this results in a higher tendency to be obese, a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and hypertension when you reach 50 years old," Sapienza recently reported.

The problem comes about because of how these childen are conceived as compared to how God intended them to be conceived. Unlike those babies naturally conceived, the ones who are created through IVF spend their first three days after conception in a Petri dish. That means they are exposed to more oxygen than is available in the womb. The altered oxygen levels & the culture media used to keep embryos alive are thought to alter how genes are expressed in IVF embryos.

Sapienza's team have analysed the levels of gene expression in 75 children born through IVF. They compared this with 100 naturally born babies. They found differences in 6-10% of the genes studied. Some of the genes that differed are known to play a role in normal development and growth. others are linked to metabolism & the formation of fat in the body.

Then there is this news about one of the most common fertility treatments in use in Britain, intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI. Using ICSI carries a slightly higher risk of producing babies with birth defects.

I know some people will say that children conceived naturally also have the risks of birth defects & other health problems like diabetes & cancer as well. True as far as it goes. But we need to remember that these problems are a result of man's fall in the Garden of Eden. If man hadn't sinned there wouldn't be any birth defects at all. this just shows that the further you drift from God's plan, the more you expose yourself to the terrible consequences that follow. I think we are seeing just the tip of the iceberg. As Dr. Sapienza pointed out, these people conceived via IVF are just reaching the age where these problems will manifest themselves. So we have no idea what the level of problems actually will be.

With many other options, including adoption, that are in line with God's plan, there is no need for things like IVF or cloning. To continue down this path in the future is to invite us to reap the whirlwind.
