Literally:
This was posted the other day on a blog I recently discovered entitled Bad Vestments. & as you can see that is exactly what he hilites A good number of them are Episcopal/Anglican in origin. & many are Catholic. There are a few Lutheran & even an Orthodox horror thrown in as well.) Not sure about this 1 but wouldn't be surprized if it is Catholic. Given the fact it has green, violet red & yellow (gold) this could literally be called a vestment for all seasons, hunting that is because it sure isn't appropriate for any Catholic Mass. Not that that fact would stop a couple priests I know of here in DBQ from still wearing it. But then they would probably be wearing it in front of a bunch of dissidents for a faux mass anyway. In fact, in at least 1 would probably have a lay woman assisting him in vestments as well.
The chasuble in the West & phelónion in the Eastern Churches originated from an outer garment worn back in Roman empire. But do you really think any respectible Roman citizen (or disrespectable for that matter) would be caught dead wearing something like the above? So why do the modern day designers of these things think they are OK?
Vestments like these draw attention to the person underneath & are often a statment of his personality. But the purpose of liturgical vestments isn't to draw attention to the person wearing them. It is to depersonalize him as a reminder to us that the priest is actually acting in the place of Jesus & not under his own authority or power. I won't go into how inappropriate it is for a woman to ever wear them as that goes without saying for me as a Catholic. But you can be sure I am NOT a fan of the poncho ladies & their agenda.
Kudos to Christopher Johnson for his courage in doing a public service by "subjecting particularly awful Christian liturgical vestments to the ridicule they so richly deserve."
