A Bishop Takes A Small Step In the Right Direction
Florida Bishop Joins Faithful in Planned Parenthood Protest
NAPLES, Florida, September 15, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Well over a hundred pro-life witnesses and a local Catholic bishop turned out on Monday to protest the one year anniversary of abortions being performed at a Planned Parenthood facility in Collier County in Florida.
The News-Press of southwest Florida reported that Bishop Frank Dewane of the Diocese of Venice walked with between 50-60 Catholics after celebrating Mass at St. Anne’s Church in Naples to join a crowd that was estimated at about 230 people by Fred Goduti, 68, head of the Collier County Pro-Life Association.
According to the News-Press, Dewane – the spiritual leader of the Florida diocese’s 250,000 Catholics – led the crowd in praying the rosary, another woman sang the "Our Father," and another individual played taps.
Planned Parenthood of Collier County has been performing abortions at its Naples location every Monday for a year. Naples is the city adjacent to the new Ave Maria University and town of Ave Maria, founded by Dominos billionaire and Catholic, Tom Monaghan.
ABC 7 reported that Planned Parenthood officials claimed they had performed 400 abortions over the past year.
Dewane’s spokesman Bob said that the bishop was witnessing to the sanctity of human life with fellow pro-life advocates and joining them in prayer.
"The bishop said the argument for abortion is that it's a rare thing," Reddy told the News-Press. "But statistics say one abortion is done every 20 seconds in the United States. That's not rare."
