Some Good News From Michigan
Michigan Abortions Decrease 13.9%
July 20, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A total of 22,357 abortions were reported in Michigan in 2009. This is a 13.9% decrease since 2009 and a 54.4% decrease since 1987, which saw the greatest recorded number of abortions in Michigan.
"We are extremely grateful for the continuing decrease in Michigan abortions despite the hard economic times we've faced in Michigan," said Right to Life of Michigan President Babara Listing. "The fact that fewer mothers are having abortions in Michigan shows more and more women are coming to the realization that abortion is not the answer for an unplanned pregnancy."
The 2009 rate of abortions means that for every 1,000 Michigan live births there were 193 abortions. It also means that about 11.2 out of every 1000 Michigan women had an abortion.
Listing said, "There are far too many women who enter an abortion clinic thinking abortion is their only choice. Thinking abortion is your only choice is equivalent to having no choice at all."
She continued: "Unfortunately, not enough women know that there are more than 150 pregnancy centers in Michigan which are here to help.
"All women deserve real, life-affirming options for themselves and their children. Right to Life of Michigan's toll-free phone number, 1-800-57WOMAN, and online outreaches are designed to connect women to these essential resources."
The number of abortions in the U.S. has been steadily shrinking since a high of 1.6 million per year in 1990.
