Bishop Pfeifer - A Shepherd Who Leads the Pro-Life Battle by Doing
“We need to step forward, make our voices heard, write letters to the editor,” said Bishop Michael Pfeifer of the Catholic Diocese of San Angelo. “The tiniest little cell in a woman’s womb is human life. That tiny little cell, smaller than a dot on a page, has the entire genetic makeup to make it a full human being.”
Pfeifer led a crowd of more than 150 people in the Rosary as part of the prayer vigil. Many in the crowd wore clothing supporting pro-life issues or promoting various Catholic churches in Abilene and the area.
The crowd consisted of young parents with children and older adults. Pfeifer said he was the instigator of the rally.
“I said I wanted to come here and pray,” he said. “When we pray, we accomplish wonderful things things beyond our human efforts. When we pray confidently, we are told by Christ our prayer will be heard.”
People in the audience were confident that the rally would have a positive effect.
“I feel very positive about it,” said Benny Candelaria of Abilene. “I think what it accomplishes is it gets the word out to the public of the sanctity of human life.” Alice Rhodes of Abilene said she believes the group’s collective voice was being heard.
“We have to continue to speak out for the unborn,” Rhodes said. “We believe in the sanctity of life from the cradle to the grave. Prayer does help.”
Carla Holeva, vice president of community affairs for Planned Parenthood of West Texas Abortion Services, said the vigil, and others held recently in front of the Abilene clinic, have not had an effect on business.
“Unfortunately, we are used to this type of activity,” she said. “It is business as usual. Patients in need of family planning will seek out that help.”
Holeva said people needing PAP smears, exams or family planning advice continued to visit the clinic even as the vigil was going on.
Throughout the vigil, organizers took great care to make sure the public was not denied access either to Planned Parenthood or to the United Supermarket parking lot, where the crowd eventually gathered.
