Some Positive Signs In the Pro-Life Fight

Even though things seem dark on the National level in the battle to defend life & fight the "culture of death" all is not gloom & doom. Here are some recent news items that show that on the state level things are going our way. & is also proof that Obama's acting like he has a mandate to expand abortion doesn't exist. It was the economy stupid! (I'll give a short summary of the article. You can follow the link to the entire story.)
Looking ahead to the day when Utah passes a law banning abortion the Utah legislature voted to create a legal defense fund to raise money to be able to afford attorneys to defend the ban in court. This fund would help the state pay any legal fees associated with a defense of an abortion ban through the year 2014. It allows private citizens to donate to it. They expect abortion advocates to definitelyfile a lawsuit against the ban once it becomes law> they expect it will cost the state at least $2 million to defend it in court.

MONTANA STATE SENATE APPROVES PERSONHOOD LEGISLATION THAT COULD BAN ABORTIONS

On a vote of 26-24, the Montana State Senate approved SB 406. The bill defines a person for the purposes of application of inalienable rights as including an unborn child throughout the entirety of pregnancy. SB 406 states, "All persons are born free and have certain inalienable rights...person means a human being at all stages of human development of life, including the state of fertilization or conception, regardless of age, health, level of functioning, or condition of dependency." It needs 74 votes from members of the Montana House so that it can appear on the ballot of the next general election. In addition to banning abortion, it could also limit any research conducted on babies during their embryonic stage of development.
The biggest problem at this point is finding the needed votes in the House.

ALASKA GOV. SARAH PALIN JOINS LAWMAKERS TO PROMOTE PARENTAL NOTICE ON ABORTION

Gov. Palin joined Representative John Coghill, Senator Donny Olson & other members of the state legislature at a press conference Thursday to call for a bill to allow parents to be notified when their minor daughter is considering an abortion. A previous law passed in 1997 was declared unconstitutional by the Alaska Supreme Court. Since then Palin has replaced 1 judge & is expected to soon replace another.
Palin had this to say about the legislation: "The most important thing at stake is the right of Alaska's children to receive the support and input of their parents as they face a life-changing decision. Certainly, if we are a society that mandates parental consent before our daughters get their ears pierced, or even take a Tylenol tablet at school, I would think that there would be support both for parents to have to give consent and be informed anyway before such an invasive procedure of an abortion would be performed on our underage daughters."
Pro-life advocates may have to try to get a parental involvement measure on the state ballot. The reason is the opposition it faces in the Alaska Senate. Senate President Gary Stevens has said thathe doesn't want abortion bills to be considered this legislative session. & Sen. Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat, may not allow the bill to get a hearing in his Judiciary Committee even if it is. The bill passed the Alaska House last year. Naturally Planned Parenthood is up in arms. Given their track record for covering up rape & incest, it isn't a surprize that they don't want any light to shine on what they do.
On Friday 20 February 2009 Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe signed into law a state ban on partial-birth abortion. This came after the bill's overwhelming support in both Congressional houses. It was sponsored by in the House of Representatives by Democrat Rep. Dawn Creekmore, & was passed 84-6 on Wednesday 18 Feb. The Senate 30-3 approved it on Thursday, 19 feb. Republican Sen. Cecile Bledsoe sponsored the bill in the Senate.
Naturally the ACLU & PP are screaming the old canard about the lack of a health of the mother exception. However, a June 2003 letter to Congress from Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) member Dr. Jane Orient said they could "conceive of no circumstance in which it (partial-birth abortion) would be needed to save the life or preserve the health of a mother." The Arkansas law is similar to the national version, except that it authorizes the state medical board to seek action against doctors who perform the procedure, and that those convicted could be punished with up to six years in prison.
___________
Then there is this news from Kansas that may make Obama's decisision to appoint Catholic in Name Only Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as Health & Human Services Secretary another no start following the Daschle fiasco. On 25 February 2009 District Court Judge Clark V. Owens released his decision denying the motions filed by late-term abortionist George R. Tiller, which asked the judge to suppress evidence against him and dismiss the 19 pending criminal charges involving illegal late-term abortions.
Judge Owens responded to criticisms of Kline that emphasized his personal pro-life position, observing, "While Phill Kline testified that he would like for all abortions to be outlawed, his investigations made no attempts to prevent lawful abortions from being performed in the State of Kansas. His procedures have certainly been questioned by the Kansas Supreme Court, but his conduct in the investigation does not merit the sanction of the dismissal of the charges or suppression of evidence."
The problem for Sebelius is her connection with Tiller. There is the fact that she won the governorship with large donations from Tiller. She also also appointed a supporter of Tiller's political action committee and pro-abortion activist John Carmichael to the Human Rights Commission. She coordinated a secret event with Tiller at the governor's mansion that was criticized because her staff failed to officially report the event.
Then there are other scandals surrounding her as well. She appointed abortion practitioner Howard Ellis - who gave up his medical license in Missouri to avoid disciplinary action - to the Kansas Board of Healing Arts. That Board is the agency that is responsible for monitoring medical staff and centers to make sure they comply with the law. Ellis resigned under pressure. Two months later he was charged by the Board with attempting to persuade a physician to falsify records.
According to Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, Sebelius meddled with an investigation by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts in the death of Christin Gilbert, who died from a botched abortion at Tiller's Wichita clinic in January, 2005. "The Board's politically-motivated premature conclusions covered her veto of clinic regulations. The Board was recently asked to re-open that investigation due to political corruption and new evidence."
Then there was her hand-picked attorney general, Paul Morrison. Remember, he ran for office as a defender of the abortion industry. But, after only a few months in office, he was forced to resign amidst reports of having sex in public buildings with a subordinate as well as abusing his authority to obstruct the investigation of abortion practitioners.
She attended a Planned Parenthood fundraiser on the occasion of her birthday in May, 2007. CEO Peter Brownlie led a conga-line dance in her honor during the party. His clinic was later charged with 107 criminal counts of conducting illegal late-term abortions. Those charges are now pending.
She has ignored Archbishop Joseph Naumann's (Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas) call on her to stop receiving communion until she disowns her support for the "serious moral evil" of abortion. Unfortunately, in the Obama administration this last fact is a badge of honor rather than the negative it should be. But her clear abuse of power to help cover up criminal activities in the abortion industry in her state should be. The only plus to her being Health Secretary would be that she would probably be out of the running for Sen. Sam Brownback's seat in 2010 when he is expected to run for governor. Actually, given her above actions she should be facing impeachment by the Kansa legislature as well as criminal charges, not an appointment as a member of Obama's cabinet.
Then there is the expectedMain Stream Media downplaying/ignoring of these scandals as well as their spin on what they do bring up. This is all a MSNBC report had to say about all I listed above: "Abortion foes strongly oppose Sebelius because she once had a reception attended by a late-term abortion provider who now faces criminal charges." Notice how innocent they make it sound There is nothing about the fact that the reception was in Tiller's honor or that it was at the governor's mansion. They just make it sound like he happenned to be there. & absolutely nothing at all is said about the scandals from her connection with him nor any of the other major scandals.
The next line of the report said: "The anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, headquartered in Wichita, called Sebelius 'unfit to serve'." While they would deny it, this is clearly ment to convey the idea that a chance attendance by him is causing abortion foes to be up in arms about her appointment. They make it sound like she is being persecuted by the evil "anti-abortionists" because she supports "abortion rights".
If she does get the appointment (which is fairly certain at this point), & is approved, I wouldn't be shocked to see her last act as governor that of give Tiller a pardon to avoid his going to trial. She might see the bit of heat she would take from that worth it if it keeps a lot of things more embarrassing (& probably criminal) from coming to light.
