McCain Choses a Pro-Life Governor for Running Mate

Sometimes events overtake your plans. A few weeks ago Kansa Governor Kathleen Sebelius was making the news because of her Pro-abortion stand, her coziness with notorious abortionist George Tiller & being told by the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas Archbishop Joseph Naumann that she could no longer receive communion.
At about the same time the, until now, little known governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin began making the Pro-life news reports. Why? Because she had chosen to give birth to a son, Trig Paxson Van Palin. Prenatal genetic testing had shown that the child had Down's Syndrome. Given that about 80% to 90% of those children diagnosed this way are aborted, that fact alone burnished her already strong Pro-Life credentials. At the time she had this to say: "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed." (Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin Gives Birth to Down Baby Despite Abortion Pressure )
So, I began toying with a post that I planned on titling A Tale of 2 Governors. I wanted to do more research on Governor Palin, so I put it on hold. Meanwhile things began heating up in DBQ with PP coming in it got pushed even further to the back burner. There was some talk about Sibelius being selected as the VP for the Democratic ticket, but Biden was selected. Gov. Palin was mentioned as an outsider for the Republican nominee. Then over the last couple of days the word began going out that she was 1 of the top finalist. Finally on Friday, the rumors were proven true when it was announced that McCain would ask the convention to nominate her for VP.
While I regret not getting my 2 Govs written, I am not exactly too upset with how events have overtaken me in this instance.
So far, most of what I see about her when it comes to being Pro-Life looks good. She is a member of Feminists for Life. Here 2006 Governatorial Candadicy was supported by the Susan B. Anthony List. The 1 concern I do have is that a line from a 2006 article in the Anchorage Daily News says she is "Pro-Contraception". It gives no documentation or pro-what types, so I can't say she definitely is or isn't without more proof. (I'm praying that even if she was, she has since come to understand the truth about artificial contraception & changed her mind on supporting it.)
Despite this, when it comes to the "Life Issues" the McCain/Palin ticket & the Republican platform offer a clear contrast with the Obama/Biden ticket & the Democratic platform. (Given how PP & the Dems are so buddy buddy, the dropping of the word rare re: abortion in the platform was no surprize. I just wonder when they will drop the word safe since PP has, despite its coverups, shown that the abortions they do aren't any safer than the back street abortions used to be.) The Dems are clearly the party of the "culture of death". Our country is on the precipice. If we elect Obama & Co. we will head full steam into a chasm of total destruction of our country & culture. The Republican party may not be perfectly Pro-Life, but the platform is aimed in the right direction to help us walk away from this chasm. There is much in it to help build the "Culture of Life".
I also like what I see on most of Palin's other stands. She is a supporter of the 2nd Amendment. Her views on marriage are OK. She is not a rabid environmentalist. But, she isn't perfect in her free market views. She is clearly an outsider when it comes to the corruption in the Republican Party in Alaska. This alone is a huge plus.
& I still have some other concerns about McCain. I am still not 100% convinced he will appoint strict constructionist judges. As I said before, the result would be the overthrough of his baby, McCain-Feingold. There are several other Constitutional rights issues that I have. I wish he were better on them. But he isn't. Still, he is far better than Obama. But it is these issues where I have concerns that are also the concerns about him that a huge number of conservatives & libertarians have. His choice of a strong Pro-Life running mate will help ease the fears of the base that might otherwise have kept them from being active.
I also realize that no 1 person is going to be able to do all that needs to be done to create the "Culture of Life". Pro-Life Congressmen need to be elected. There needs to be ongoing education of the public with the truth about abortion, cloning, etc so that they will understand the need for true Pro-Life representatives. & finally, as I have said so many times, this all needs to begin with prayer, be undergirded with prayer & end with prayer.
This is definitely going to be an historic election. Either the 1st black president or the 1st woman VP will be elected. Except for the rabid, radical, moonbat, extremist feminazis, she will help in the area of the "woman's vote". (CAUTION: Diatribe ahead) Hopefully this election will get us past a whole bunch of things we should have been long past. I am sick & tired of "race" being a factor. We are all 1 race, HUMAN. We have different ethnic backgrounds, but that doesn't qualify or disqualify a person,. Skin color has nothing to do with ability & neither does gender. What I care about is who is more qualified, who best represents my views, who will be best to bring about the "Culture of Life". This is why, even though I would love to see someone of Italiano heritage in the White House, I will not blindly support an Italiano-American running for office. I could never vote for Mario Cuomo (or his son Andrew), Rudy Giuliani or Nancy Pelosi as long as they are Pro-Abortion. Pro-Life trumps ethnic pride every time. (Diatribe over)
It will be interesting to see how things play out. In some ways she is the liberal media's worst nightmare. The MSM & Dems will have a hard time claiming she is inexperienced. She has more executive experience than Obama so that could backfire. She is a proven reformer. & she is a woman. & there is where I think they will focus. I suspect that they will attack her as a traitor to women as she is Pro-Life not Pro-abortion. (Just like conservative blacks are called traitors & Uncle Toms.) They might throw in a little of her evironmental stands as well.
It is also interesting to see how things currently stand in the polls. Obama should be way ahead & have gotten a bounce from the convention. Yet, he isn't. In fact with all the coverage of Pelosi & the Bishops, he has probably been hurt more than helped this past week. Esp when it came to Obama's selection of a Pro-abortion Catholic (In Name Only) Joe Biden. In fact, since Roe v Wade not a single Democratic ticket with a pro-abortion CINO in either position has won (Ferarro, VP 1984; Kerry, Pres 2004) has won. (Dukakis as a pro-abort Greek Orthodox didn't fare any better.) I don't know if they think the 3rd time is the charm. I suspect it will be "Strike 3" instead.
Of course this all depends on how McCain & Palin handle things, esp after the convention next week. There is plenty of room for them to build on the Pelosi fiasco with Biden, esp if the Bishops are forced to keep the issue to the forefront. & with Pelosi, I suspect it will. THERE IS ALSO PLENTY OF ROOM FOR THEM TO STUMBLE.
There is much we still need to learn about Gov. Palin. Her strengths & her weaknesses will be the focus of media attention. The area of foreign policy is 1 that will get a lot of the attention. & her political enemies in Alaska will do their best to see that the worst gets out. Esp those Republicans she pissed off. Of course the fact that she was right to take them on because of their corruption will undermine a lot of their claims.
But for now, it seems like McCain has made the right choice for VP.

So you have expressed here many of the same thoughts I have on this subject.

I am still very concerned about McCain's stance on Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

I am going to be watching very closely over the next 66 days to see if I am going to be able to pull the lever for McCain/Palin.

One thing is certain, if it well Palin/McCain I would be easier to pull that lever.

    Vir,
I've recently heard that McCain has rethought that stance. In fact this is what he has on the campaign website: "As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos." So, it seems like he has changed his stance. But, I also see a little wiggle room there, so time well tell here as with so many other things.

Whereas previously, a Down’s child could be born without the prior knowledge of the mother, going forward, a parent with a Down’s child will likely have made a conscious choice to have that child. As prenatal testing for trisomy 21 becomes ubiquitous, Down’s children (and eventually those with other genetic disorders) will increasingly become symbols of faith – a freak show meant to communicate the “family values” of their parents. The children will become public sacrifices made by their parents for their faith. They will be a symbol of religious reverence in the same way as the scarred backs of Catholics who flagellate themselves, or Buddhist monks who set themselves on fire, or Sunni Muslims who mutilate their girl’s genitals or Shiites who bloody their children’s heads with swords.

Genuine moral virtues – such as integrity, honesty, and productivity are not useful as evidence of religious virtue. To the extent that their practical benefit is visible to everyone, they do not represent the special domain of religion. To demonstrate religious virtue, it is necessary to sacrifice authentic moral values in favor of “religious” values. The particular object of the sacrifice is not important – there is nothing particularly “biblical” about being prolife (the Christian bible just as easily supports the opposite position.) If Christian fundamentalists decided that cutting of one’s hand sufficed as proof of moral virtue, they would be wrong to do so, but not much more so than the numerous other ways that people find to be self-destructive.

What is really vicious about fundamentalists in America is that the prey on the most vulnerable –poor pregnant young girls and women, those dying from painful terminal illnesses, the loved ones of brain-dead patients, — and children afflicted with terrible genetic illnesses. One can at least grasp the moral indifference with which a fundamentalist can force a single young mother to abandon her goals and dreams and condemn her and her child to poverty. But what can we say about a parent that chooses a life of suffering upon their child? If we are morally outraged by child rapists, how should we judge a parent who chooses a lifetime of suffering on their own child?

After reading heroiclife's comments I was absolutely livid. I went to his blog & found a post where he expanded on this comment. Here is my response to that post that applies as well here:

Where do I even start to respond to this & the post you left for my blog. 1st of all children with Down’s Syndrome are NOT “freaks” as you so cruelly label them, they are human beings with the same rights as you & me. I was a special ed major & college & I can tell you that throught my almost 53 years of life that all these “freaks’ as you label them have only made my life richer.
Which brings me to your quality of life comment, by who’s standards? Yours?

I won’t even go into the lies & twisting of scripture done by the hate group that calls itself freedom from religion. Yes, I call them a hate group because that is what they spew, HATE.

Instead I will leave you with a quote from Corrie ten Boom when she was brought in by the Nazi SS during WW II for questioning. The Nazi officer told her: “If you want converts, surely one normal person is worth all the half-wits in the world!”

Her reply: “”The truth, Sir, is that God’s viewpoint is sometimes different from ours- so different that we could not even guess at it unless He had given us a Book which tells us such things. In the Bible I learn that God values us not for our strength or our brains but simply because He has made us. Who knows, in His eyes a half-wit may be worth more than a watchmaker. Or- a lieutenant.” I couldn’t say it any better."
