While I am no big fan of driving in the stuff, let alone shoveling it, I find great beauty in how God designed snowflakes. Kenneth G. Libbrecht, who is a professor of Physics & Physics Dept Chair at Caltech has a great appreciation for the beauty that is found in them. He has developed a website, SnowCrystals.com, that takes a look at snowflakes & crystals. As he says on the site: "This site is all about snow crystals and snowflakes -- what they are, where they come from, and just how these remarkably complex and beautiful structures are created, quite literally, out of thin air." While you may not be familiar with him, I guarantee you that most Americans are familiar with some of his work. In 2006 the US Postal Service used 4 of his photographs for a set of commemorative stamps. (1 of those photographs is at the right.)
If you are in any way curious about snowflakes, how they develop, etc, than this website is definitely worth checking out. The pictures alone make doing so worthwhile let alone the plethora of other info & fun things. You don't have to be a flake to check it out either.
& yes, he does have the definitive answer to the eternal, infernal question "Is it really true that no two snowflakes are alike?" (You need to check the website out for the answer. Do you think I'd let you off that easy?)
(Photo used in accordance to his instructions: "Web Uses: If you want to publish something from this website on your personal website or blog, that's fine, but please include a link to SnowCrystals.com.")
