18 September 1837 - Charles Louis Tiffany & John B. Young established what would eventually become Tiffany & Co. 170 years later it is still just as true that "stiff backed or stiff kneed, you stand tall at Tiffany's". Perhaps best known for their jewelry, in 1885 they were hired to redesign the National Seal that is still seen on the $1 Bill today. & during the Civil War the provided the Union Army with swords, flags & surgical equipment. Charles' son Louis Comfort Tiffany was also known for his stained glass windows, lamps etc that are often imitated but have never been duplicated. It was shortly after they began that they came up with their unique blue packaging. Besides the song made famous by Carol Channing & later Marilyn Monroe, Tiffany's has been featured in several songs as well as providing the title & a locale for the movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. For better or worse Tiffany has become a part of our culture.
