A few weeks ago President Bush veted a bill that would have expanded research using embryonic stem cells. Pro-Life groups applauded this as a step away from the culture of death & toward the culture of life. Sadly some recent developments have seen a turn back to the culture of death. Thursday the FDA announced the approval of what is called Plan B for sale over the counter to women over 18. So what is Plan B & why is it a step backwards?
Plan B, also known as the "morning after" pill is a hormone pill that will prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg in the lining of the uterus. In other words (& these are words groups like Planned Parenthood don't want you to hear) Plan B is do it yourself abortion. Quite bluntly, if the egg has been fertilized, then it is already a seperate human being. Preventing the embryo from being implanted is murder, plain & simple. It is now much simpler for an abortion to be performed.
Many pro-life groups are also pointing out another danger. Despite claims to the contrary by the FDA, this is going to be available to females under 18. There will be ways around the barriers to access found just as sure as people under 21 have still found ways to get ahold of alcohol to drink.
Plan B has also been shown to be harmful to many of the women who have taken it. Most of the pro-life websites I have listed will be able to go into details about the dangers of Plan B. So, I won't bother to go into the gory details of all the dangers. Please check out their sites.
In particular I would recommend the following from Life Issuses Institute, Inc. It talks about 4 forms of birth control (The pill, Norplant, IUDs & The "Morning After" pill aka emergency contraception) & the reality that the are abortifacients, not merely means to prevent conception.
The 2nd setback is the nomination by President Bush of Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach to head the FDA. Dr. von Eschenbach supports the decision made Thursday by the FDA. Clearly, having someone as the head of the FDA who supports making abortions more readily available is not the way to go.
