As Jack Smith @ The Catholic Key Blog points out, look at who will win the Catholic Press Association book award in theology this June. & if the winner is a former president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, then you can be all the more sure there is plenty wrong with it. or as he puts it:
The Next Theologian to be Censured by the Church will be . . . . . .announced at 6 pm, June 24 at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown Hotel. That is when the Catholic Press Association will hold its Annual Awards Banquet at which the First Place Book Award for Theology will announced. Winning the CPA book award in Theology has coincided so often with subsequent investigation by the U.S. Bishops’ Doctrine Committee or the Vatican, that another editor friend of mine once quipped, “CPA in the Spring, CDF in the Fall.” (follow link for rest of story that gives several examples)
The other sure bet is that once again the Non-Catholic Reporter (aka the NC Fishwrap, the NC Distorter etc) will win the CPA award for Best National Catholic Newspaper for the 12th year in a row.
When it started 100 years ago, the Catholic Press Association may have served a good purpose. But these days it seems to do more harm than good by encouraging dissent & awarding those who undermine authentic Catholic teaching. At the end of his post, Jack Smith asks "It makes you wonder why editors and bishop-publishers who strive for “loyalty to church teachings” return every year to seek approbation from an organization that clearly doesn’t value that commitment." I will go 1 step further & ask, why do they even belong to it in the 1st place? Either push the CPA to clean up its act or get out & start a real Catholic association for those in the press.
