A few days ago I put up a post about the 2009 National Catholic Youth Conference in Kansas City. (In This Case 22,000 Youth Definitely Can't Be Wrong) In last Sunday's edition of our Archdiocesan newspaper (the Wit-less as I call it) they had an article about the conference. To read the article (Teens explore faith at youth conference) you would get the idea that the whole thing was just 1 great big feel good party where God occasionally came up. Neither the article or the 2 pages of pictures even hints at the Eucharistic procession with 22000+ youth involved.
In reality, I am not surprized that this is how our Archdiocesan paper played it. 1st of all the editor is a LCWR-type Franciscan. 2ndly, the Archdiocesan Center is a hotbed of liberal dissidence & finally, our Archbishop is more concerned about PC appearances & money than being a shepherd in anything but appearances unless forced to.
But despite the way it was covered it did occasionally slip out that there were some deep spiritual experiences. But you would have thought that it was all based on an emotional hugh from the feel good experiences emphasised rather than things like the Eucharistic Procession & other devotional actions as well as talks that truly challenged them to grow in their faith.
