A belated Happy Thanksgiving to you, Al. In Canada, we celebrated it last month. TH2 is quite sure that the US used to celebrate it in October as well, but changed it to November after your second Pres. Roosevelt. (open to correction here).

Actually, it was celebrated on the last Thursday in November before Roosevelt. He changed it to the 4th Thursday to give the Christmas shopping season a few extra days. Not that that seems to matter much any more.

The regular celebration of the last Thursday in Nov began under Lincoln in 1863. Before that it was sporadicly celebrated.

& while most historians ignore it, the 1st Thanksgiving was in Florida on Christmas Day in 1565 by the Spanish settlers. They were led by Spanish Adm. Pedro Menendez de Aviles. The spot was near St. Augustine & it was held right after Christmas Mass. That it was Catholic & Spanish probably explains why it has been ignored.
