OK, I will admit that not every opera is destined to be a classic & that there haven't been some iffy subjects over the years. But this has got to be the biggest farce doomed to be a failure since Gioachino Rossini was forced to write the music for Il signor Bruschino, ossia Il figlio per azzardo (Signor Bruschino, or The Gambling Son).
So when I saw this headline, Britain's Royal Opera to stage life of Anna Nicole Smith, I had to say "Per che?" Is Britain's Royal Opera that desperate?
Actually, given the subjects of many operas over the years, an opera about Anna Nichole Smith's life isn't too far fetched. After all, if someone can stoop so low as to make an opera about Jerry Springer why not her? In fact, Richard Thomas, who wrote the libretto for the Springer opera is writing the libretto for this. Given what that opera was like I highly doubt that Director of opera Elaine Padmore's claim that "It is not going to be tawdry, it is going to be witty, clever, thoughtful and sad." rings very hollow. Sad, maybe. Sad that they are even wasting their time on this.
This whole story just shows how shallow & empty her life really was. Sadly, given that that is what sells, it just might be a hit. Which makes it all the more tragic.
Anna Nichole Smith's whole life was 1 that was not a success in any way shape or form. It was a life that was shallow & empty. The real tragedy is that, rather than turning to Christ to find true happiness, she turned to sex & drugs. The result, she didn't find life, just death. None of that will be in the opera. & without that, the opera won't be the tragedy it is ment to be, just a farce.
