As you exercise your right to vote in this important election please ask yourself, “What would Mary do?”
Mary, like Jesus her Son Our Lord, is motivated above all by compassion for the weak, helpless and oppressed. Thus, upon being informed by the Angel Gabriel that she would become miraculously pregnant with Our Lord, and that as confirmation for this prodigy her aged, barren cousin Elizabeth had become pregnant herself, Mary did not wallow in self-satisfaction or become preoccupied with her strange situation. Rather, she immediately traveled “in haste” to come to the aid of her elderly cousin. Luke 1:39-41.
When the wedding party at Cana had run out of wine Mary made their plight her own and induced Jesus to perform his first miracle for them, as a result of which Scripture records his disciples began to believe in Him. John 2:11.
How would Mary, Model of Compassion, vote in this election, in which the fate of so many innocent unborn babies will take a turn for the better—or for the worse? Consider these Scriptures, among many of like import which Mary would surely see as a guide to her decision:
“He who shuts his eyes to the cry of the helpless will himself cry for help and not be heard.” Proverbs 21:13
“You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.” Exodus 22:21-23
Who living among us is more helpless and oppressed than the innocent unborn, whom our laws have made fair game for elimination at the whim of their mothers, or more often of feckless boyfriends who force abortion upon unwilling, unhappy mothers? Are they not the truest of orphans, abandoned to a painful, lonely death not only by their parents but by our very laws?
Would Mary be so shortsighted as to vote based on arguments by any candidate that he or she would help improve our economy? Surely not. When all the fingerpointing is done the little acknowledged fact remains that our economy has suffered greatly from the absence of millions of young workers and consumers, all killed off by the abortion holocaust.
More important, though, is that no nation that oppresses the weak and helpless can expect to long continue in peace and prosperity, ignoring God and His immutable law of love for our neighbors.
So, dear children of Jesus and Mary and friends of the unborn, please pull the lever for LIFE next Tuesday, and every day.
