& all the more reason why we should get rid of the tax exempt status for non-profits. That status that allows us to take a deduction for our taxes only came about when we got an income tax. Before that churches & charities DID JUST FINE GETTING DONATIONS. & they will be able to do so again.
Having said that:
This attack is not a seperation of Church & state issue as the Americans United for Separation of Church and State claims, it is an attempt to take away free speech as well as tell an organization what they can or can't say. It is an attack on what the 1st Amendment clearly says, not what these "we hate free speech, free practice of your faith" people say.
This group is ignoring 200 years of history because they hate God, even though they will deny that. They hate real free speech. They only want their viewpoint to prevail & will use whatever means possible, including blackmail. & that is what their actions boil down to, blackmail. Sadly, their tactics often work, esp where the priest or minister isn't aware of what the law actually says.
If their attacks weren't partisan & an attempt to limit the speech of those they oppose, then why aren't they going after the churchs that have allowed Obama, Clinton & other Dems campaign from their pulpits.
In a catholiconline article Deacon Keith Fournier wrote: "This clause was never intended by the American founders to prevent religious groups from full participation in the public square nor to censor out religious speech or the religious speaker from civic participation. It was never intended to stop Bishops from being Moral teachers. The I.R.S. prohibits churches and other nonprofit groups from endorsing or opposing specific political candidates. None of these bishops did that. Americans United simply does not like the content of the message and is trying to censor it by silencing the messengers." (FYI Deacon Fournier is a constitutional lawyer. I would recommend the 2 articles linked below where he further develops the above quote.)
Besides Bishop Arthur Serratelli of Patterson, they are also going after Bishop Joseph F. Martino of Scranton, Bishop Kevin Farrell of the Diocese of Dallas and Bishop Kevin Vann of the Diocese of Fort Worth for their recent statements. Given Archbishop Chaput's recent speech, even with his disclaimers, I suspect they may be lining up to take aim at him next.
Group asks IRS to investigate Catholic bishop against Obama
